I am unable to find my ancestors from Poland. Jan Dziekanowicz left from Galicia to arrive in Hawaii on the H. F Glade that departed from Bremen Germay and arrived at Honolulu on July 27, 1897. On the same ship was my great, great grandparents Nichola Kolomyi and Maria Kolomyi with their children Katarzyna, Zofia, Tekla and Mytro. Can anyone help me find my roots?

Kolomyi

I had a look on familysearch.org, but couldn't find a single person with that surname. I did find quite a few with the surname Colomy, so maybe it was changed?

I did find a burial notice for a Katherine Colomy Dziekanowicz ( Katherine is the English spelling of Katarzyna ), but it is probably not the right one, plus I'm slightly uncertain as to the relationship between Jan and the Kolomyi family. Did he marry one of them?

Do you have any further information other than what you have given?

That looks promising. The mother of the person in your link is the same Katherine Colomy Dziekanowicz I linked to above.
Can't get over the spelling of the surname in your link though. Definite proof of how surnames were changed and butchered!

My name is Joyce --- I reside in New Jersey in the U.S.A. I am trying to find my maternal grandmother's family. Thus far I have been able to find out that they came from Cmielow, Poland. The surname is C'heba. My grandmother's first name was Josephine -- born on either February 23 or February 24, 1885, She also had 3 brothers (names unknown now) and one was rendered deaf and dumb due to an accident. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone can you please contact me. It would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

@Joycie

Lucky you. Yes, Cheba is a Polish name. There are only about 500 people with that name in Poland, so you can assume it is a unique name and that you are related to all of them. Yes, there are people with that name in Ćmielów, and they belong to the Assumption of Mary parish. The best way to contact them is by writing a letter, getting it translated into Polish, and sending it to their Pastor:

Ks. Kacper Kotkowski
Parafia pod wezwaniem Wniebowzięcia NMP
ul. Ostrowiecka 36
27-440 Ćmielów
Poland

or you could try emailing him at:

parafia.cmielow@vp.pl

Paper letter works better, but try both.

Dominic,

I just now came across your answer to me after all these months. I have been trying for quite some time to locate any family members I may have in Cmielow, Poland and have always come to a dead end. Thank you so much for the information you have given me. I will first try to email the pastor.

God bless you and thanks again.

Joyce
