Spalko 8 | 33 7 Oct 2008 / #1I am curious to found out the American meaning of the Polish name Janek. I know that Jan means John because my great-grandfathers name was Jan Rucinski but I recently had a letter translated from Polish to English and it mentioned a Janek and sister in law ans I am wondering if that is another version of the name Jan. If anyone could help me out that would be greatly appreaciated. Thank You!!
whyikit 6 | 102 7 Oct 2008 / #2As far as I am aware it means Jan but a nice way of saying the name, can be used for like parent to child but can be used in other contexts. I am sure someone else will confirm for sure, I think it is like nice Jan..... I use the same sort of thing with my Gfriends name, but her friends also call her it from time to time.

wildrover 98 | 4431 28 May 2010 / #19I am English , and my name is Ian , but most people in Poland call my Jan or Janek , or Janusz.... Ian is the Scottish form of John , so its all the same really....i guess in Russia i would be Ivan , in Germany Johann...
SeanBM 34 | 5786 28 May 2010 / #22Yeah, English are everywhere.But I was wrong about the Ian/Sean thing...
annawnek 1 | 4 28 May 2010 / #24That name is very popular. I have it in my family tree too..... My aunt's maiden name is Janek and married name is Sharetzsky....
johntudek 27 May 2018 / #25Someone posted that Janusz is just another form of Jan/John. nothing could be further from the truth. Janusz is from Janus, the Roman Household god. Nothing to do with the Hebraic John, or God's gracious gift . Just want to set the record strain
kaprys 3 | 2101 27 May 2018 / #26Janusz is derived from Jan.Btw, it's interesting how it got a really new meaning now.
