Fabianowicz name

I've often heard from my mother the phrase "I don't even know what we are". When I was much younger this never impacted me because at that time I couldn't care less -who- I was..but now being 23 I'd really like to find my roots.

Now, before you asked I have searched family roots from word of mouth and searching...and; I still have not found much history that is solid enough for me.

So my simple question would be; Could you tell me anything about my last name?

Fabianowicz. I've searched the ending that can either result from a Polish or Russian background.

Anything at all would help!

This says to me that she was simply accepting the reality - that to be Polish means that you could be partly German, partly Jewish, partly Russian, partly Austrian, partly Czech, etc etc.

Some Lithuanian names also had their endings changed to wicz. Have you looked at passenger ship records? Sometimes these give clues as to your roots.

Don't look at the ending because about 1/4 of all Polish surnames have it, so it doesn't matter where it originated from 800 years ago. I have to agree with Delphiandomine here, there are no pure blooded Poles, everyone is part-something. The spelling, however, is definitely Polish, I don't think there exists any other language with 'cz'.

FABIANOWICZ: This is a straightforward surname of patronymic origin which means nothing more than 'Fabian's kid'; an equivalent English surname would be Fabianson. It also appears in the form Pabianowicz
