What is the meaning of surname DATA? I've heard from someone that it is originally an Italian name. This person was able to trace back to 1600's in Forno, Italy. DATA is my mother's maiden name and her parent's were from Rzeszow.

I am also interested in find out information on my mother's mothers maiden name which is DUPLAGA. Would like to know information on my father's fathers name SZEJWA.

Thank you.

Duplaga -- belived to have been brought to Poland in the 16th century by Italian courtiers, merchants, gardeners and artisans imported by Queen Bona Sforza, wife of Poland's King Zygmunt the Old. Italian meaning of Duplaga is obscure.

You said Duplaga means "obscure"? I heard it was derived from the meaning of some kind of bird - "dupla" . Just confirming, you think it is of Italian origin and not Polish.. right?

The Szejwa name - you said it is of German/Yiddish origin. I've tried looking up the name and keep getting a lot of Jewish records. Do you think it is a Jewish name? As far as I know, my family has been Catholic.

You have confirmed for me the information on the DATA name. That it is of Italian origin as well.

Could you please give me meaning of KOZLOWSKI name. My father's mother's maiden name.

Thank you for your responses to my inquiries.

Dupla is also the Ukrainian word for a tree hollow (in Polish: dziupla). However a Duplaga I contacted in Poland said their family tradition points to the Itlaian connection. This is therefore merely a hypothesis, not an unquestionable truth.

Yiddish is a dialect of German and many woprds are identical in both langauges. That also pertains to the word Schewe. But after 2 or 3 geenrations a family usually became assimilated and naturalised in the country of residence unless they lived in an ethnic enclave. Also, many Jews converted to Catholicism. Only a professional genealogical researcher could possible track down your roots but in view of the volume of records lost in the wars, partitions and insurrections there is no 100% guarantee of success.

A kozioł is also a billy goat (main meanign in agrarian Poland); male roedeer is the secondary meaning. But most -owski ending surnames are of toponymic origin, hence Kozłowski was the way someone from Kozłów, Kozłowo or Kozłówka would have been nicknamed.

I did not say Duplaga means obscure, I said its meaning was obscure, ie uncertain, difficult to determine. You would have to consult a reliable Italian philologist to establish its etymology and possible variant spellings.

How can I find out more about the Duplaga & Data names and the connection to Italian origin?

How do I go about tracing the names back?

You'd probably have to consult a professional genealogist. My speciality is linguistics, ie the name itself, its etymology, structure, modifications it may have undergone, etc.

I was searching under the name "PLAGA" instead of "DUPLAGA" and it came up under a site on an Italian forum. I also found on another site a Stanislaw Plaga. Could this be a derived from "PLAGA"? I mean could they have changed it in Poland to DUPLAGA?

Merged: DATA surname

I am trying to find information on my grandparents Stanislaw and Katarzyna Data. I've always known that they came from Rzeszow, but some of the records on ancestry.com show that they came from Stara Wies. Is Stara Wies a town in Rzeszow? How do I go about finding birth and marriage records of my grandparents? Were do I look, in Stara Wies or Rzeszow?

Hi moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/data.html

This site seems to indicate that there are two main areas of Data surname incidence. That may pinpoint you in the right direction.

Here you can see:

maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=stara+wie%C5%9B&daddr=rzesz%C3%B3w&hl=pl&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=30.461748,86.572266&ie=UTF8&ll=50.833698,21.994629&spn=3.032154,10.821533&z=7

That there are 5 towns/villages called "Stara Wieś" one is pretty close to Rzeszów (south of it)

While googling for "Stanisław Data" I've found this:

allegro.pl/item906477970_stara_wies_brzozow_z_dziejow_wsi_dydek_unikat.html

It's an auction site similar to ebay it seems someone was selling a book about Stara Wieś and it seems that if you look at the contents there's a chapter called "Illustration listing" and one of the illustrations is called "182. Stanisław Data 351"

It might be just coincidence though. : o Anyways it's the about "Stara Wieś" in Brzozów area.

DATA: of Italian origin but not uncommon (app. 1,600 bearers) esp. in south Poland which is closest to Italy.

I meant the the table of contents of the book. I do not speak Polish. I want to know if the Stanislaw Data mentioned is my Grandfather.

I'd say there's not enough information to be sure, not just by the contents. I'll translate every part that includes anything with association to Data surname.

Contents:

Chapter: KAWALEROWIE VIRTUTI MILITARI 329
(Cavaliers of Virtuti Militari Order)
Subchapter: Józef Data 329

Chapter: WIERNI SWEJ MA£EJ OJCZY-NIE 349
( Loyal to their small fatherland )
Subchapter: Stanisław Data 351

SPIS ILUSTRACJI
Chapter: Illustrations listing ( probably just a list of people on different illustrations from the book )

171. Józef Data, legionista 329 ( Józef Data, legionnaire )
182. Stanisław Data 351

That's all there is, it might be worth getting the book, or at least calling the city council and getting some information that you could correlate with what you've come up with.

Seeking members of DATA & Duplaga families from Stara Wies, Brzozow, Rzeszow

Trying to find family members of Stanislaw Data who was born in 1899. His spouse (my grandmother) was Katarzyna Duplaga who was born in 1903.

I come from Stara Wies. Jozef Data was my grand grand father. He was born in 1895, came to US in 1930, and came back to Poland in 1960.

Stara Wies is a villege 30 miles south of Rzeszow. He had many siblings. We may be related.
Adam

Bronislaw Duplaga was also my grandfather. He was one of the youngest in his family. He's brothers left for the US in early 1900 and settled in Pittsburgh area. Also from Stara Wies. the record of Duplaga in stara wies go back to 1822, the name of that person, according to my uncle from Pittsburgh, was Martinius Duplaga. I do have a copy of that family tree.

Check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stara_Wie%C5%9B,_Subcarpathian_Voivodeship
Ring Gmina Brzozów, ask for the Ewidencja Ludnoiści (public records) dept, and check if anyone with your surname still lives there.

DUPLAGA: probably from dupla (Ukrainian for tree hollow) or duplak (double-woven cloth or snipe, a bird)

Hi Teresa55,

Thanks for the information of 113 inhabitants in Brzozow with Duplaga surname.

Do you have any idea how I can obtain a list of their names and addresses and phone numbers?

I used to have a website to get Poland Phone numbers-but it no longer exists.

Thanks,

teresa55,

I don't understand the workings of this site fully, so I don't know how to go about sending a PM.

It seems impossible to find White Pages with phone and address numbers online for Poland.

My great grandmother was Aniela Duplaga. She was from Golcowa, Poland. She came to America on 3 separate trips, 1903,1905,1907. She married Wojchiech Aniol from Golcowa. He changed his name to Albert Angel and she changed her name to Nellie Angel once in America. Do you know any of her relatives??
