Well Pigsy - for luxury or quality products - sure - they clearly have a good business model there. But people buy over-priced stuff which is available elsewhere for much cheaper. I guess the Tri-City is a good case in point. The big supermarkets have been frozen out of the centres and the old folks have to shop in such places. It's the old case of convenience shopping come back - I'm a fan of Dame Porter and the Tesco's revolution myself - it's a pity that Tescos Poland sells crap of course - so you are right - Alma are filling a niche.
I just don't like them for some reason. I can smell the pretentiousness - maybe it's the green decor et al. The U2 of the grocery business. Plastic and "cool". I grudgingly admire them, but only shop there for special one off luxury items.
PS Their British "cheese" costs an arm and a leg and would not be featured in the Monty Python gag - because it has never seen a
Good Day/Evening ~ I am trying to find a supermarket site that will show their prices. We are interested in moving to Poland ( my husband's & my father's birthplace).
The dollar is = to 3.75 zloty. However how many zloty's are needed to buy a gallon of milk ? thanks I advance for any information you can share with us. :)
Hi Willow. Tesco Poland have an online shopping facility where you can see prices. When I lived in Warsaw to get the best value for money I did my shopping in three different supermarkets and the local 'farmers' market. My locals were Lidl, Real and Alma. Lidl is very cheap but you have to be selective about what you buy there, Real about average and Alma quite pricey but they have lovely speciality foods and fresh breads, cakes etc. Local market tends to best for cheap, reasonable quality fresh fruit, veg, bread, fish, eggs their meat is ok too but the health and safety practises can leave something to be desired!
Thank you Atch ! I am now going to spend some time on the site. I did have to reconfigure currency as they use the GBP not Zloty. It seems some prices are the same as here in New York ! And other items are way less expensive. This will take a bit of time to average out. then...property shopping :) perhaps a farm ?? a home not in the city ?? research, research, research, :).

Willow you need to visit the Tesco.pl site. That has prices in złoty. And yes food can be surprisingly expensive in the big cities anyway. My weekly shopping bill would cost only about 25% less at Tesco in Warsaw than at it does at Tesco in Ireland.
25% less? Thats fantastic. my shopping bill is only about 10 % less than Id spend in the UK. The gap or discount would increase in my favor of course if my basket had lots of vodka and beers. Moreover, prices are way higher by comparosin than I'm used to in the UK when considering how low Polish incomes are typically reported in the press.
Alma are definitely very pricey. I would shop there for 'treats' rather than regular weekly shopping but last time I was there which was summer of 2013 I noticed that some of their prices were no worse than Real.
Tesco in PL has ridiculous prices and their management is stubborn like a donkeys. Their discount prices are equal regular prices elsewhere. Do they think that people are stupid? They should visit Carrefour for training how to run a business.
Besides buying fresh fish once in a while at Tesco, I now don't buy anything else there. Over the years, Tesco has gone downhill and now most of their products are pure s... and the customers I see there are really "low class". Carrefour is much better but I prefer Leclerc. I go to that one near Al. Jerozolimskie which has the advantage of never having huge lines thanks to the Biedronka store just opposite - most people shop at Biedronka ;). I went a few times to Auchan and was not impressed. Real is cheap and sh...ty. I'm talking about stores of the same category.
