Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland?

That would be double the price though, at around 12PLN for 200g instead of about 6PLN. For people like me, that's quite a lot more to pay on a regular basis and hurts the old pocket.

That's indeed not cheap. Speaking about cheese and Lidl...They used to sell Dutch Gouda cheese in chunks which was quite good (it even tasted like cheese, which cannot be said from the majority of the cheese sold in Lidl). Sadly I do not see it anymore on the shelves.

Not sure how 45zl per kilo works out to be 12zl per 200g. And from memory Alma is about 65zl per kilo and Piotr i Pawel more than that.

I think it's too steep (expensive) to have regularly. Of course, with the salt content of cheese, that might be just as well...


Because it isn't that price here for those of us in Wrocław, is how it works out. It's 12.99 for 200g here at every shop you can name that stocks it.

But I think Carrefour or Auchan have it on promo for that price occasionally on a block. I'm hoping Lidl will do the 400g Hatherwood (Adams) Mature for 11zl again next year, but I'd not bet on it.

There's loads in my local one, strangely. There's also a new cheddar on sale - 11.99zl for 400g, I forget the name - it's got a red label and is apparently produced in the UK using British milk.

So get a train to Warsaw and stock up here!
I have fond memories of a bloke I used to know here in Warsaw who saw that his local corner shop had got a slab of Kerrygold cheddar in but couldn't make the woman behind the counter understand that he wanted to buy the entire 5 kg slab. Apparently he ended up just going behind the counter, sticking 250zl in her hand, picking the thing up and walking out with it.

You mean at Lidl? But you're nearer to Warsaw than Wrocław aren't you, I think. That cheese you describe is I reckon what I'm after if it is in a black wrapper and says Hatherwoods (or something like that) mature cheddar.

I am at a guess what you do with 5 kg of cheese? I would understand how to digest a crate of Belgian Duvel beer....but 5 kg Cheddar?

Btw apparently you can freeze it although maybe it loses some flavour and texture, or gets crumbly or somethin'.

No, it's not the Hatherwoods one, it's in a white package with a red label. The price tag thing is handwritten, which is odd. I'll get a picture for you :)

I'm in Poznan, so closer to Wrocław. It's not a bad price, but I wonder about the quality of this one...

I took you at your word earlier and legged it over to Lidl. There was some "ser cheddar 6.66zł" earlier today it seems, but the shelf is bare now. While there, I saw at least 2 other people prod the shelf and empty box there in the pathetic hope a pack had fallen behind the empty box (the empty box was for another product). I don't know which cheese it was, but it was not the one I want anyway (the Hatherwoods) so I'm not too sore about it. Lidl should take note that a fair few customers were disappointed at the exhausted stock and they should consider buying more up, especially the Hatherwoods ;o)

I tried some of the cheddar that appeared in lidl lately and Its ok though id prefer it a tad bit more crumbly.. Dont remember the name though :o

Their recent Scottish coloured mature is reasonably crumbly and rather strong IMO.

Genuine Cathedral City is at Polish Tescos from time to time, yes. It's currently 12.90zl for extra mature, 11.90 for mature, and probably 10 or 10.90 for mild. You'll find it at the deli counter at Bielany Wroc. Mag Park doesn't often have it, and I've never seen it even once at the other 2 branches I know of.

Tesco Poland's own mild cheddar is cheap and not too cheerful at all. It does, however, make a good door stop.

I don't think M&S has any cheddar cheese at its Wroc food hall. It has a few ready meals and much its range of popular teas and biscuits, though. Uwaga! You might need a stiff drink after seeing the prices on some lines.

I have the impression they hiked up their prices considerably this year. I wanted to buy corned beef (as far as I know only they sell it here in Warsaw), but 23 PLN for a tin....

That's cool, I think I tried it - definitely the mild one, probably the mature one too. It was quite good, nothing out of the world though ;)


I don't remember tem being that steep, bought some good biscuits and pastry in there. In comparison, Alma seems much more expensive than M&S, especially the walkers shortbread cookies which I worship..

And btw, I wonder if there's some good cheddar in Alma, I need to check in next time when I'm in Renoma ;o

There's a chilled eco/organic variety in the cabinet at my local Auchan next to the soya slices etc, in the aisle with the cereals, 2 bags left, not cheap.


I think they have Irish Land and Kerrygold mature, about 13zl a pack. They also have Polish cheddar, if it's anything like Tesco's I won't buy it!

I'd be afraid to eat polish cheddar ; ) And I think I've seen Kerrygold in plenty of places - it was the first I've seen and tried in Poland..

It or something like it (mature-ish) currently on the block at Auchan here, 43zl a kg. They don't always have it, so snap it up now if you want some. They also have mild Irish, 41 a kg.

Just in Lidl this morning to pick up the last of the Cheedar. Spotted a new 400g block made by Dale Farm in Norn Iron (Northern Ireland to the unfamiliar). Packaging looks a little similar to Cathedral City. 11.99pln for 400g is the best value I've seen here - and it looks like it will be a regularly stocked item like the German Kerrygold butter.

@Irishlodz, thanks. Unfortunately, they're not doing those lines here yet, if ever. I'll keep my eye on their stock with renewed hope from now on though !

They have the same Valley Spire in my local Lidl in Młociny as from today.
Did anybody already try it & is it comparable to the other ones sold by Lidl?

I bought one as for now, will go back for more I think. Pricewise a very good deal though.

That's it alright. First spotted today so I expect it will be everywhere soon enough. Best value in the country. Dale Farm at home is a pretty mild cheddar, flavour is okay but it has the right texture. Only 9 months maturing so no big kick.

I believe Valley Spire is Lidl's own brand, and I think the cheddar is Irish.

I hope it has vegetarian rennet (podpuszczka) which in Poland is usually called mikrobiologikal or something like that in Polish on the sklad/ingredients.

The local Lidls here don't have it (yet?) which is surprising as people from many different countries use my main branch. I saw several shoppers looking disappointedly at the empty cheddar shelf on Mon.

In this case, I hope they will stock up regularly. As for now it was in the shelve with other end-of-the-year specialities.

Checked 2 Lidls here in Wro today -- no mature cheddar of any kind.

Checked 2 Biedronkas again today -- ditto.
