In Polish tradition are any special dishes associated with the New Year's holiday? I have heard of the nowolatki figural cakes baked in the Podlasie region. Anything else?

Cold buffet that goes good with vodka and beer: herring (lots of different kinds of herring). Chunks of farm-made sausages including kaszanka and czarna. Good farmer's bread with smalec (pork lard with craklings) or mackarell spread and homemade pickles. Smoked chicken drumsticks. Smoled salmon. Pickled mushrooms, peppers and baby squash. Eggs with mayonnaise. Pigs feet in aspic with homemade horseradish or hot mustard. Gingerbread cake, poppy seed cake and cheese cake (eaten with hot spiced wine or tea with rum).

If anything is served warm, it will invariably be bigos (meat and cabbage), and clear red beet broth in mugs, maybe with hot pastries stuffed with meat or mushrooms.

The dessert combos all sound really yummy ;)
