A Polish dish with peas and eggs

i have no idea what its called and it may well be regional, its also going to be hard to describe. my friend asia made this when i stayed at her house in poland. it is made using a mould, or maybe a cup,to get the shape right. basically it contains big peas, with a sliced boiled egg on top in maybe something like aspic jelly? it looks almost like a dessert if you didnt know it was savoury. i took a picture of it because it looked so pretty. it looks like a mini tower..any ideas anyone?

Seems like you are talking about "galaretka" which in fact is a savory jelly. You make it like normal jelly, but instead of a flavoured jelly you need gelatine (unflavoured jelly base). Then you add the ingredients that you like (you can also add some savory flavour to the jelly). You can make it in steps - add one thing, pour jelly, wait till in settles, then add another, pour, wait... but it takes long time. Good luck!

thanks very much for reply. couldnt get back to you before because had no internet yesterday. it sounds like the same dish, it was definitely in savoury jelly.:)

Come on, you haven't seen "Galareta'? BTW, one of the more disgusting aspects of Polish cuisine.
The one on the the picture is with fish.

Indeed! My mum used to make me eat this stuff as a child. I can't even face the jelly inside pork pies for this reason.

Mind you, growing up speaking Polish as well as English, I always wondered if we should be eating "pies" anyway. i thought that was a Thai thing. haha.

My mother always makes it for Christmas and Easter. Everyone (except for me) goes on on how great it tastes. I'm like pawian. Don't care for jelly.

hope to god i am not going off topic now!! i loved this dish!! the jelly inside pork pies i ate as a child. its lovely!! pork pies are an english tradition!!!!this dish reminded me of my childhood! :)

some folk put vinegar on it. it sort of melts the jelly.

but not me. i can't stand the stuff. the jelly/aspic that is

It reminds me how my mother served the dish to us when I was 10 or sth. I was looking at that stuff in disbelief for about 20 minutes, pouring spirit vinegar onto it every 2 minutes, according to mum`s advice, hoping it would dissolve that awful jelly. Urged to start eating, I took the first bite of it and immediately threw up. That act excused me and my sister from having it. Never ever again did our mom commit such a grave mistake.

Come on guys, jelly combined with meat is so revolting I cannot comprehend how one may eat it. I prefer eating the whole elephant brain to one fekking little meat jelly.

dont fancy dinner at mine then? galareta for starter,main course pork pie, and maybe jelly and ice-cream for dessert?hahaha!its a bit of jelly..at least its not a brain !
