Removal of Polish diacritical marks

Merely curious, Mods, as to why I'm not able to access the Polish diacritical marks. Is this temporary or has PF been completely re-formatted?

If so, then I'd need an app in order to use these special symbols, yes?

Perhaps the problem lies in my pc after all:-)

No, it's not your PC Lyzko. I have the same problem.

I think it is intentional as it says " Removal of Polish diacritical marks " next to " Home " and " Language ".. Not sure what the reasoning behind it is though. Perhaps Admin is just tinkering and they will be re-installed again later.

Or perhaps more insidiously, Polish is being phased out slowly as an operative language here on PF and will eventually be replaced solely by English.

Do you have Windows 7 or 10? If so: polishnewsseattle.org/info/PolskieLitery.htm (You may have multiple language in your Windows system and it takes a click to switch them).

If that's gonna make you stop mutilating my precious language then I am 100% up for it!

In that case, let's opt then for only Polish diacritics to prevent you people from mutilating my precious language!

I presume you're talking about ł,ż,ś etc.

I think the question should be "Why haven't I installed software that allows me to use them regardless of which website I'm visiting?"

On my lappy I have Polish language installed, and on my smartphone I have SwiftKey which allows you to install multiple languages - the extra characters are long-press options. Every now and then I have to visit the character map for uppercases on laptop, but apart from that it's easy to get used to.

Yeah, well some of us are too busy to pay a visit, so let's see if in their infinite wisdom our mods might possibly restore the characters to the way they were:-)

Still a mystery to yours truly as to why they were removed in the first place, but then again, perhaps some things aren't worth finding out after all.

Me too. They're not that important on most thread discussions, but essential for the Language forum I would have thought.

Windows, Linux, OSX have Polish characters / Polish keyboard available with a couple/few clicks.

I have looked into this, but from what I have read, installing Polish means that I have to set it as my display language, and everything else will then be in Polish too.

Polish is already installed in your system - you just need to enable it. It's about installing the Polish keyboard only, NOT changing the language of the whole operating system. In Windows, go to Settings / Languages and +Add a language (Polski) - and voila, you have Polish letters when pressing ALT+letter.

You then have to download the language pack and keyboard. No mention is made of using the keyboard only. The next stage goes onto say about changing the display language, and the only option is ' set as default'.

In Windows 7/10 you do it with a couple of clicks - language packs should already been pre-installed, they just need to be enabled. I don't know if you're in the right place - you need to be in Settings / Time & language in Windows.

No. I have just added Polish and it is now downloading it. Yes, I am in the right place ;) Probably once it has finished downloading I will have to set it as default.

You can switch between installed languages with ctrl+shift combination.

Thanks. It's still downloading, and I've selected the option to add Polish keyboard, but I'm not great on a computer to say the least :-(

+ once you have the Polish language/keyboard enabled, there is NO NEED to switch it into EN (English) because PL (Polish) covers both English and Polish.

I know that combination because of many and I mean many misspresses that were ******* me off. I believe that Polish language REQUIRES usage of Polish diacritics and it drives me mad when alt+z doesn't work :))

I'd try to use the right Alt on the keyboard (not left) for Polish letters.

Still downloading.....I've added the keyboard, but how is that supposed to work? Do I have to wait until language pack has also downloaded to enable it?

Well... I use only Polish keyboard so.. :)

Well it's finished downloading and no options at all displayed, so tried the keyboard.......and the Polish letters I can type are á, é, Á,É. If I try to do any other Polish letters, nothing happens.

These are not Polish letters. You must have a different keyboard. Btw, how do type á or é on your keybord, for example?

No need to set it as default. I've just enabled the French keyboard in my Windows7 and at the top of my Windows screen I have now a little button saying "PL Polski (Polska)" - it is my "default" which had existed before, but was not displayed. Now, if I click it, I can see another line just below it saying "FR Francuski (Francja)". When I click FR, this becomes "default" and is displayed (PL dissapears from the button) and since that very moment and I can write in French which means, for example, that pressing the key "9" results in having "ç" on my screen, pressing "2" results in having é etc.

When I want to go back to Polish, I press FR button and all possible choices (in my case PL and FR) appear again, so I click PL and from now things return to "normal" for myself, the PL is displayed again.

In your case you should add (that is enable or activate) PL, so you can switch to it whenever you want. Of course, you may add as many language keyboards choices as you wish. Next time I'm going to add the Russian keybord.

No they're not, they should have tails and not acute accents. Doh! Kept thinking something didn't look right......


Pressed Alt right, and then the appropriate letter.


The Polish language package is now installed. When you click on it, 3 choices come up. Set as default, options and remove. If you click on options, you get add a keyboard, so I've added it. The result is áéÁÉ and nothing else.


I don't have this or anything else I can see which looks relevant.

Anyway, I'm done with it now, I can't be arsed to p1ss about with it anymore!

I really cannot understand why the diacritics were removed in the first place. Will be a nightmare posting in the language forum without them :-(
