Has anyone been to "SZALAS" restaurant in Chicago area?

Good day!

A group of us will be in the Chicago area this weekend. We are planning to go to the "SZALAS" restaurant....near Midway airport. Both it and the menu look wonderful. Anyone been there before? If so, any recommendations regarding the menu items? Are reservations needed?

Thanks in advance!

I've been to Szałas a couple of times. The food is excellent. I personally like the placek po węgiersku, but most anything you order will be good. Very nice atmosphere, reminiscent of some of the places in and around Zakopane. And the service is a bit on the surly side, just like in Poland, so you'll get the full Polish dining experience. ;)

I don't know that you'll need reservations. Both times I was there, they had plenty of available seats, but you may want to call just to make sure.

Beware, though, of the neighborhood. It's a bit on the ugly side.

For Chicago, only very slightly, and not during daylight hours.

I would, at least as far as Bobak's. Well, actually I'd drive, but only so I didn't have to lug groceries back to the car.

I keep meaning to try Szałas, but never get around to it. When I was a kid, and it was called the Red Barrel, my family went there almost every weekend. I wonder if they still keep the rabbits alongside the building.

Same here, I live on the Northside and rarley go down that way.

There are plenty of Polish restruants to choose from by my house, I might just go to Czerowne Jablsko buffet for lunch today, thanks Im starving right now:)

Theres 2 of them, the one on Milwaukee/Devon is good but the one by Belmont is just horrible..That whole Mill/Belmont neighborhood has just gone down the drain, most the Polish have moved out of there.
