I have just read in the news that a new "circulating" gossip is that the president elections might be postponed till next year due to "financial crisis" in the US of America and there is a possibility of a Martial Law being implemented.

in the Polish news this morning. An American, Alex Beam, who writes for the Boston Globe was quoted but I could not find the American version yet.

I was about to post a link to the BBC website, but I'm getting a message
'As long as this page is open your copy/paste functionality has been disabled.'

just post the link then

here it is:

Here is the latest big-picture conspiracy theory, which has been gathering strength on the blogosphere the way a hurricane feeds on Caribbean waters: It is widely believed, both online and, increasingly, offline, that the Bush administration intends to declare martial law and postpone next month's elections. To prevent Barack Obama's inevitable ascension to the Oval Office, obviously.

thanks

It looks more like rumour than fact.

When are people going to learn, when in a crisis the last thing you should do is panic?

I've actually heard the same thing. Troops are being deployed on the streets. Say it isn't so.

I thought that that was an interesting thing:)

On the other hand, you note that Ireland's largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, is laying 20-1 odds that the American election will be postponed. When I first checked that site on Tuesday, the odds were 40-1.

Irish people will bet on anything, 2 snails climbing a wall and they'll bet on it

that is funny. In my previous job I used to make bets on how long the new office assistance would last and when my boss found out, he was no too happy with me.

I think they got the USA confused with thailand somehow. the govt and its friends have such control in america they dont even need troops to control the people because people dont even fight back

somehow I get a feeling that you like the Thailand solution Chris:)

yes power to the people if the system isnt working than its the system that is broken. a new head of the same system gets the same result

The next thing we know, Bush will be pulling a Putin and revamping the political system to keep him in some semblance of power. Martial Law in the US? It sounds VERY wrong but it shows how the US has changed in recent years/modern times. Maybe exaggerated hysteria tho

a new "circulating" gossip is that the president elections might be postponed till next year due

Two points:

1. "a gossip" is a person and not "a piece of gossip". Sorry I usually avoid teacher mode but using non-count nouns as count nouns drives me crazy (the same say "dwie mężczyźni poszły" might drive a Pole crazy).

2. this isn't new, it's an old bit of conspiracy lore that reappears every four years. there's a lot of crazy people in the US and they have _very_ strange ideas about what the government is up to. these are the same people that say the 9/11 was carried out by the US government to gain more power. for a long time they've been saying that the government would engineer a massive financial market disaster as a prelude to declaring martial law (and then it gets really strange, look up 'amero' 'garden plot' and/or 'new world order' in google).

There seems to be a crossing of wires. U r both right in saying that a gossip is a person. There's no disagreement but u seem to be disagreeing

I edited my post because it is not about grammar. Some teachers get on my nerves, but I understand their frustration since most of them are underpaid and undervalued:(

I meant the "teachers" on PF;). My present teachers would never correct the spelling if I had a point and I usually do.

my point was to post info about the conspiracy theory circulating in the US and the grammar mistake is irrelevant to the context of this thread.
