pickpockets or gangsters in poland?

Hmmm.. That`s stranege. I haven`t been mugged or pickpocketed in my whole life - and I`m living in Poland. The only bad experience I had was a meeting with two blokes who attempted to brake into my hotel room but later ran away.

Shall we go with the statistics once again ?

As you know statistics mean nothing.

Statistics mean everything - that`s why they are being made - to create a wider view of the situation.

Statistics mean everything

Imagine this:you are a black student living in a Russian town with strong anti-foreigner feelings. In such towns black students have been killed by thugs and even beaten by the police. So you would never report such attacks to the police/authorities because the police will just laugh and then beat you.So according to the official police statistics for this town things are perfect and there are no racial problems.

That is just one example of why statistics mean nothing.

It depends how they are being made. I the student would be asked the question in an anonymus survey made by some other agency the data would be correct - and this is how such statistics are being properly made.

In Krakow it happened to me twice. But again it is big town with busy public transport so it is easy for them, In England in my town bus service is quite bad and most people drive so there is no much work for pickpockets.

There are professionals that work the train stations. Especially in Warsaw. I'd worry more about pick pockets there than gangsters.

True, however pick pocketers only take your money, gangsters end up killing you.
I have been to poland 10 times and have not been robbed or assaulted (granted I am 184cm tall and 95 kg, fit as a mallee bull) but I must say I picked my mark where I went and what clubs I attended.

Good advice for tourist is to blend in with the locals, ie dress, appearance, and manner, dont't advertise the fact that your from overseas.

When going to a atm machine, observe who is around you, when leaving move in one direction and then double back, observing who is around. may sound strange but it works.

Stop picking on the UK our stats are only that bad because of the Pakis and the Irish (pakis bring our literacy stats down - Irish make us look like we drink too much and once again the Pakis are thieving sex pests who drive our crime rates up!!)

LOl....so Shelley........whats it like being a presumptious racist?

Why should people behave as if they are bereft of all civility, respect?

Say those sorts of things in your work, mixed crowd when you are out...and see what response you get........no longer acceptable........so last century......

I did see someone get robbed at around 1:30 am in krakow. I was walking back to the hotel by myself.(friend was sick so he stayed in) Somewhere I took a wrong turn and was lost. I looked over across the street and a guy ran up behind another guy and snatched a bag in his hand. The guy ran after him and the thief dropped the bag and kept running. I've never seen anything like that before. Needless to say I took the next taxi I could find. Probably the best 30z I ever spent.

Why do you think I went back at 1am that night? lol.....because we left the club at 5 or 6 the night before then found a cafe that was open and had a few more beers. Went to the hotel at 8 or 9am. Made that day rough to say the least. :)

Seriously do not trust any government statistics on crime regardless of what country your in. My friend works as a criminal research analyist for the UK government, he's a leading crime stats man.

He says all crime stats have to be rearanged by law to comply with diversity and anti racial discrimination laws, especially in the UK and the states. In the world of stats "re-arranged" means falsified.

Ever since the government stated categorising people into ethnic groups, that's how long stats have been able to be falsified. Ethnic profiling is not just here to doctor bad performing demo graphics, its here so that the government can legally boost its own stats for its own bodies (i.e. police force performance).

What im trying to say is stay away from stats / media, what you hear on TV and talk to the locals in real life. They are the people that know.

I've been to Zamosc and Poznan and found that as long as you don't stand out you wont get pick pocketed. This is the same in any city wether it's in Poland or Spain.

Put your wallet and phone in your front jean pockets dont put any cash in your coat pocket or back pockets.

Lee-UK,

English people always stand out. They look different !

Haircuts, fashion, the way they act, etc.

It's the little things: North of England = no sideburns

..............................London = sideburns
