Celebration of the 1989 election that marked the end of communsit rule in Poland may be cancelled because disgruntled shipyardworkers are planning to demonstrate during the festivities in Gdańsk. PM Tusk has said he would change plans if some disgraceful spectacle was being prepared in full view of Merkel and other foreign bigwigs. The shipyard workers say it's ironic that it was the shipyards that started the collapse of communist rule and on their anniversary the yards are being destroyed. The government accuse the workers of sabotaging the event and recinforcing German claims that the fall of the Berlin Wall was what brought communism down. Any comments on who's right?

Where is the link?

From what I know of history, it was Lech Wałęsa who did so much to break the communist hold by starting the riots which spread across Poland. Surely the Berlin wall coming down was a separate event that followed later. I don't know what the situation is now with the shipyards but there must be a reason why the workers feel so strongly about the situation. It can't just be ignored.

They are losing their livelihood, look at what happened to the ship yards in the UK..no amount of protesting will save them.

I'd say that the few remaining shipyard workers are doing severe damage to the reputations of the tens of thousands of former shipyard workers who did so much to free Poland from communism and should always be viewed as heroes.
