At least 21 people have been killed in a fire at a hostel for homeless people in north-western Poland, officials say.

Another 20 were injured in the blaze in the town of Kamien Pomorski, 60km (37 miles) east of the border with Germany, which began in the middle of the night.

Many of the injuries were sustained as residents jumped from upper floors of the three-storey building.

At least 77 people were staying at the hostel, waiting for the local authority to provide them with housing.

Fire in hostel in north west Poland kills 21.

As one might expect... this is the only news story today on Polish TV.
The pictures showed a terrible fire and unfortunately the list of dead may grow.

Sad news.....was it a case of someone being careless with a ciggarette , or dodgy and overloaded Polish plugs in an old electrical system... ? Russia seems to suffer such tradgedies often , and mainly due to poor electrical safety....Whatever the cause its so sad that people who are already having a hard time have been killed and injured....

Thanks Wroclaw, I have begun to read that article. Is that right that they haven't been able to contact so many people? That's scary.

The picture that goes with the article shows how flimsy the building really was.

Anybody got any practical suggestions how to help the survivors of this tragedy....I don,t have any money to give them , but i am willing to get some aid together and drive it up there as soon as i get my replacement Jeep over to Poland...Its in my corner of Poland , so would not be too difficult to get to them...I have previous experiance of taking aid to Belarus , and Poland , but has anyone any suggestions as to what we can do.....?

PD, I was here: onet.pl

The TV showed hospital pictures of those being treated. Among them was a very young child covered in bandages. It makes you think.

PD, I was here:

I know but it just directs me to onet.eu.

I have read that a child was injured.

It makes you think.

It does. I also think that it's a nice gesture for the country to have 24 hours of mourning for those who have died.

wildrover

A nice gesture from you too. I guess if people just donated clothes or something, even just to get the survivors through the next few weeks. I remember a friend of mine lost everything in a house fire and she was so very grateful for the donations of clothes she received from others in the neighbourhood, after the fire she didn't even have one pair of underpants to her name, only the pyjamas she was rescued in.

pathetic.

This number of people die daily on Polish streets through drink driving. Also, everybody in Poland drinks and smokes. The cancer rate is enormous in Poland and very few people live past fifty five anyway.
