I was pleased to see that a Polish metro (subway) station has been selected as the most beautiful in the world.

Such a verdict was reached by architects participating in the MetroRail 2008 conference in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. Its main competitors were Madrid, Vancouver and Copenhagen. Warsaw's only subway line consists of 17 stations and covers 19 km. Plac Wilsona station opened in 2005.

There are some pics on the following site. Now let's see what we can do about building/renovating our football stadiums before Euro2012 !

it all looks nice..but wasn't Wilson an American President? Why didn't they name the station after a Polish personality?

Why didn't they name the station after a Polish personality?

Wilson was the champion of Poland and proclaimed the need for its independence in the Peace without Victory speech of 1917 and the much more famous Fourteen Points. Ignacy Paderewski himself once called him a "foster father of a chiefless land". President's Wilsons stand proved very important for the rebirth of the Polish state. Naming one of the stations of Warsaw subway in his honor is very fitting, don’t you think?

i knew it's a tricky one... ok, then...thanks Piorun...
it's just that Polish have a tendency to overuse English and American words and names... sometimes i think that we are loosing it...

No argument here. Personally I have the same opinion.

Why didn't they name the station after a Polish personality?

Presumably because the square the station is under is named after Wilson and all metro stations here share the name of the main geographical feature closest to them.

sometimes i think that we are loosing it

Could you be any looser?

THE PLAZA USED TO BE CALLED ŻEROMSKIEGO BEFORE WW2. I THINK IT'S GOOD THAT IT'S CALLED WILSON'S, I AM GLAD THAT WARSZAWIACY FOUND IT IMPORTANT TO HONOR SOMEONE WHO STOOD BEHIND POLAND WHEN IT WAS NEEDED THE MOST.

I was pleased to see that a Polish metro (subway) station has been selected as the most beautiful in the world.

Good God! Is there really such a thing as a 'most beautiful Metro station comp'? Must rank alongside things like 'Anorexic soap stars on Ice!', '3-legged dogs dance themselves into a tizzy!' and 'Failed Polish actors eat an elephant' Pretty good shows really. The elephant one was good, it took 10 actors a whole 6 episodes to eat that jumbo, although it was an African one with bigger ears.......eh, back to the point, the Plac Wilsona metro just looks like a big mausoleum. Still can't beat Moscow metro I think

I have to agree with you on that ..... Moscow Metro is something awesome !

However, I may be mistaken, but the award that Plac Wilsona Metro got was for the most recently constructed stations.

sometimes i think that we are loosing it...

Especially when under Communism the Poles hated the West and never had a single good word to say for them.

Then, all of a sudden, they all dramatically, simul-flipping-taneously changed their minds.
Must be something to do with smoking noisily in parks with their funny-looking noses or something, eh, Micky?

Sure that the Polish government under communist times spread anti-west propaganda .... but this was not the view held by the person on the street!

In fact it was quite the opposite .... communication with the West was very limited, but most Poles aspired to the Western way of living.
The opinion that everything in the west is better than in Poland is still held by many Poles .... I believe wrongly; it's the old "grass is greener" syndrome !

Poles and Poland, I believe have a lot to be proud of .... there are many positive things happening in Poland, and I believe in majority of cases it is heading in the right direction.

Poland should also try to maintain it's cultural identity and not become a clone of the West.

I guess USA subways were not considered because the amount of and quality of graftti and filth were not part of the judging. Now , who has the worse system in the world? As for USA , California screams with speed, Chicago is functional, and NY is just overcrowded. So I would rather gallop throught he city on horseback anywhere in the world rather than take the subway.
