I'm not certain exactly what you need to get a NIP, but I think I can give you a starting point...

You'll need to register your address with the census department (Wydział Ewidencji), which in Krakow is located at al. Powstania Warszawskiego 10. You'll need your current rent contract for where you're living. (I don't recall what other info you may need to bring.) They'll give you a confirmation paper. Also, after a month or so, you should be able to get a PESEL from them. (Everyone staying in Poland for more than 2 months is entitled to have a PESEL issued.)

The next place you'll want to go is the department of foreign affairs (Wydsiał Spraw Obywatelskich i Cudzoziemców), at ul. Przy Rondzie 6. They should be able to help you better understand the system of what exactly you are applying for, and what supporting documentation you will need. I suspect you are looking for a residency card (Karta Pobytu), but I'm not certain of all the details.

Good luck

As you are coming from the EU I don't think you need the residency card. However the advice concerning PESEL is correct, you can use your European Health Insurance Card thing in hospitals, but it's a nightmare the amount of forms and things you need to sign...much easier just to get your PESEL and be done with it (that is also required for buying things on credit, etc as it is proof of you staying here).

As for your NIP number, there is an office near Bratysławska Tram Stop on the corner of Józefa Wybickiego and Krowoderskich Zuchów where you can pick up your form for NIP, once that is filled in (bring a fluent polish speaker) you will need to submit it, then they will ask you why you need a NIP number and so on and so forth. Then you are sorted...ish.

You won't get the PESEL without the 5 year EU residency card though - you need the 5 year permit to obtain the 5 year registration of address, and without the 5 year registration, you won't get a PESEL as it's only for people who are legally in Poland for more than 3 months.

Getting the residency permit is well advised - it makes life much easier as knowledge of it spreads. Any sort of credit relies on the 5 year permit, for instance.

Ahhh, thanks for clearing that up. I was going to apply for my PESEL soon, but I am guessing that, as I don't have my residency card that I can't get it. I was told by someone that I can just pop into the office, fill in the forms and then (after a police visit to confirm adress) they sent you out the PESEL after 2 or 3 months.

You can get NIP with just a Passport. This is a tax-related number therefor they have monetary incentive to issue it and thus will issue it more regularly than Zameldowania and PESELs. I had no problem with either my Zameldownia or PESEL however with a valid 1-year visa, but I did this after I had already procured my NIP.

Nope, it's not just so simple - the PESEL is given by the Urząd Miasta after you register your address for 5 years. It's usually a two week wait or so to get the PESEL through once you register your address for 5 years.

You can't register for 5 years at the Urząd Miasta without the residency permit issued for 5 years by the relevant Foreigners Office - and so you can't get the PESEL. It can be an utter bureaucratic nightmare getting the 5 year piece of paper too :(

But in so far as I can tell, there's precious little that you need a PESEL for - vehicle and driver licencing would seem to be the only thing that you absolutely must have it for.

Is that not the number you need when you are registering with a doctor and such like? And do you not need one to take out a contract on a mobile phone?

Yes.

It's a must for medical (hospital) treatment.

It's not mandatory for medical treatment - as long as you have proof of ZUS cover, you don't need anything else. They might ask for it and do the usual "waa, brain doesn't compute" when you tell them that you don't have one, but there's nothing stopping you getting treatment without one. The only thing that *is* mandatory is proof of health insurance - and in practice, the EHIC card is more than enough.

Sure, you need one for a mobile phone contract - but this isn't really mandatory in day to day life.

It's really just the same as in the UK - you don't *need* an NI number.

I have that and have used it. However it was a hassle and I just presumed it would be easier all round to get a PESEL number as well as that because it obviously suits their paperwork better.

Sure, you need one for a mobile phone contract - but this isn't really mandatory in day to day life.

That's true, I have just always found the contract phones work out cheaper than pay-as-you-go and I find the bills easier to manage when I know roughly what I am going to be paying a month. But I guess I will have to do my 5 years first!

It's really just the same as in the UK - you don't *need* an NI number.

I am aware of that, but, like in the UK, I can imagine it makes many aspects of your life much easier.

So now I need to go off and get this residency card.
