Pro-business and post-commie lawmakers reject Epiphany public holiday

The Sejm, dominated by the ruling pro-busienss Civic Platform and backed by the post-communists, rejected a measure to restore 6th Jan., the Feast of the Three Kings, as a public holiday, as it was before the communists banned it.

Opponents argued that an extra free day would harm the economy. But the greatest confusion is caused by the dual 1st and 3rd May holidays which usually take an entire week out of the working month. What is the point is keeping the Communist Mayday holiday on the books, when Poland dumped communism in 1989?

There are already a lot of bank holidays in Poland and Mayday (which is a workers' holiday but not only communist) makes for a very nice long weekend with good weather due to the 3 May holiday.

Epiphany would be a strange holiday at a time when nobody really wants one.

Exactly. When the global economy looks like It may completely collapse in the near future, we simply can't afford more holidays.

Should still be hungover and poor after Christmas and New Year.

Try being a little more optimistic - it might not be that bad. I do, however, know the feeling of not being able to afford a holiday.
