Hey everbody, today is my girlfriend Anna's name day. I am away from her at the moment and can't be with her. In reading about name days it seems that most people celebrate them more than they do their birthdays once they reach a certain age. She says it's nothing really important or special but I can sense something in her voice, that maybe it's more important to her than she's letting on. Do you guys recommend anything special or sweet I could say to her, maybe in a text message? We talk on the phone everyday and of course I will tell her something then but I want to send her a message in the morning before she goes to work.

Its 02:21 in Germany so technically its tomorrow for you but today for us..

Yes you are right and it's that time also in Poland. But at the moment I am not in Germany I'm in Bahrain until the end of September.

I would suggest flowers, interflora

I gave her flowers back on her birthday which was in June but I think it may be too late to get her anything now. I will have to go and look. I thought about getting her a necklace that has her name on one side and on the other is her name in Arabic. They are popular where I am at right now. But I couldn't find a design that I liked and she seemed like it was nothing special, but now the more I think about it the more I think I should get her something.

name day

This was the first I have ever heard of such a day. Very interesting and a fun thing to know to share with others. :)

Im sure a simple text off you to say you are thinking about her on her name day will make her happy, maybe get her the bracelet as a gift for when you come home.

Yes on Polish calendars there are names for every day and they are in honor and in memory of patron saints.

Now that you say that, I remember my grandma bringing up hers, I guess I'll just read over all those names... ;) Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the idea. I ordered her some flowers. They're going to be delivered to her at work tomorrow. She's going to be so surprised!!!

Merged: advice on name day gifts

hello everyone,

i'm not quite sure if i'm posting this in the proper area...

my husband's 'name day' is tomorrow. he's polish and has been in the US for just over 2 years. i am an american. we live in CT, USA. we've only been married 3 months, and this is his first name day since we've been together. (actually we had just started dating about a week before his name day last year, but i missed it because i had no idea!)

what is the appropriate thing for me to do as his wife on his name day? should i get him a gift? flowers? a card? a cake? i really am clueless, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi, name day is very important celebration in Poland. It is like a second B-Day but smaller. And gift should be the same way... smaller than what you usually get him for B-day. Card would be nice but no cake. We do not buy cakes for name day. Maybe a book, CD nice dinner....It really depends what he likes.

Thank you so much for all of your help! i went with a cargo net for the car (which he wanted) and a fragrance set. we'll probably go out to dinner too. he just found out he has to work most of tomorrow so i'm hoping the gifts will brighten his day a little a least. thanks!
