Just because no Polish girl wanted to give you her telephone number doesn't mean that we don't use them, you know. :)

Cell phone companies in Poland can't send to the US because different wave frequencies. He does try, but they come decoded and the message ends up somewhere in India on somebody else's cell phone.

You can also get software and send through the internet to your phone.

It's either 900-1800MHz and in the US these GSM frequency's are the same, so that's not the problem. I can receive SMS from most providers in Poland. He may not belong to a carrier that allows outbound to the US.

Polish people with cell phones is a quicker information dissemination mechanism than the Internet:)

Joking aside one of the things I have noticed about Central and Eastern European people is that they are phenomenonally good at networking. I was once told that it was a result of communism when things were in short supply. That may well have been tongue in cheek though

That could be true. But depending on the country, some US cells won't work in them. But then it all depends on the carrier too.

they called it "ba,ki".

Was it maybe "dzwonki"?

Well, I know some carriers here can't roam in Europe..like all CDMA (verizon) But, most GSM if the correct freq. can roam anywhere in europe.

....crrently working for a wireless provider in the US...in case you wre curious :)

I live in a dinky little town. They don't have much choices of carriers. I have US cellular and it's the best one because I can text messages and have direct contact with Europe. Other providers will charge extra for that or don't have it at all.

I have T-Mobile. There service sucks at times but I have an open GSM phone and can text messages and receive massages. I also can buy any SIMS card and use it locally it's much cheaper. Example, my mother went to Poland roamed in Poland all the time but it was $0.99 a minute. Imagaine my phone bills for the three months she was there. Last year I bought her a Polish SIMS card showed her how to use it and she got a local cell phone number in Poland, free incoming calls, voicemail and SMS. The rates were much cheaper as well.

I am wondering what providers offer the best service, prices for handsets, offers. I have looked through the websites of "Orange" "Eras" and seen what they offer.

Orange is the cheapest and most popular amongst the Poles

Cell phones in Poland

Since I will be moving to Poland, I wanted to get a cell phone for local services. I have my phone from the states. Do you think it would be best to bring my phone from home and set up services or just buy one in Poland? Will they set up services through a verizon wireless? What are the average service prices and prices of a phone? Thanks for the help...

just get yourself a local sim card - if your american phone needs unlocking its easy to get done, otherwise just pick up on over here - not expensive

Cell phone plan in Poland to make international calls?

Can someone tell me of a good cell phone plan that will let me contact my family in the US?

Don't know if this is of help for anyone but here is my solution:

My choice is a very simple Nokia model (second hand, old fashioned=no big deal if got stolen or lost) which is of course unlocked being second hand.

While at home (EU) I put my local SIM in and that's it. While at my second home in Poland I put the local prepaid (Carrefour) SIM in and that's it again.

Long distance calls from Poland are no problem with either of the SIMs but way too expensive for me (about 2zl/min). So, I use Messenger and Skype to chat with my friends.

I've found this solution best for me. Hope this helps?
