Greatest Polish Films

In my opinion the greatest Polish film of all time is "Ashes and Diamonds." I'm very aware that I'm not an expert on this subject as Polish movies are hard to come by in the states so I open the discussion up here; what are the greatest Polish films?

As I said, "Ashes and Diamonds" is my number one, followed by "The Decalogue" and "Kanal." That's 2 Wadja films in the top 3, I know. But as I said, my resources are limited. So please discuss AND even better alert me to some places where I can cheaply find Polish movies.

Also, this is another talking point, can you consider the Hollywood films of Roman Polanski true Polish movies? How about Polish Americans like Billy Wilder? Do they're films count?

So please discuss AND even better alert me to some places where I can cheaply find Polish movies.

1. If you have any friends in Poland - ask them. Old films are very cheap and they can easily send you parcel with DVDs inside.

2. tvpolonia.com/en/about.html tvpolonia - check this. From time to time they are transmitting old, classic films
3. The best choice is imho this: kinopolska.com/usa.php kinopolska

Personally I like Bareja films (Alternatywy 4, Zmiennicy, ...)

Polish Americans like Billy Wilder

That's interesting - didn't know he had Polish ancestry.
(Great film - Some Like it Hot)

Yes, Billy was 100% Polish. He often gets grouped into Austrian heritage because he was born in the Galacia section of Austrian Poland. His mother was killed in Auschwitz.

The best polish comedy: "Sami swoi" and for the young generation "Chlopaki nie placza". The one I would propose to non-poles is "Dzien Swira" which in a half funny way talks about the national depresssion.

You should look at pretty much anything by Kieslowski, Wajda and Polanski.

You can obtain these from Astabe.com or even cheaper, places
like DVDPacific.com or CDUniverse.com.

There is so many Polish movies that I like, but if I have to choose one, it would be "Killer". To be honest, I like every movies with Cezary Pazura, he is really good comedy actor.

Przesłuchanie, Plac Zbawiciela, Człowiek z marmuru, Człowiek z żelaza, Rh+, Seksmisja.

With the exception of the latter, all quite serious. I do like funnier/lighter films too, though. Nigdy w życiu!, Kariera Nikosia Dyzmy, Superprodukcja and Dlaczego Nie! have been notable recent favourites. It's not a film, but I wish someone would put "Trzy po trzy - Numery z kwatery" out on DVD, because that show always makes me PMSL when I watch it :-)

I personally really liked "Mis", "Komornik" and "Seksmisja" - recently i also watched "Lejdis", which isn't quite aspiring, but still very funny. IMO.

I hope i find time to watch "Plac Zbawiciela" at last, i heard some REALLY good opinions about it. ; )

[Sorry for my English]

Xin.

"Ogniem i mieczem" wasn't too bad.
They had some nice horses there.

Merged: Polish films of the past 5 years or so?

I recently finished watching Day of the Wacko and When the Sun Was a God, and now I need more Polish movies to watch! Any recommendations of movies from the past 5 years or so?

I love all types of movies... romantic, drama, dark comedy, action, war movies, etc.

Thanks! :)
