What is the difference between these two words, wrzesień/września..Would the later, be used, just for writing dates?

wrzesień is september and it's the nominative case. września is the genitive case. and yes the latter is used for writing dates. or just stick to 09 ;)

"Wrzesień" is a name of the month - "September".
Wrzesień jest dosyć ciepły - September is quite warm.

"Września" is "wrzesień" in the genitiv.
Nie lubię września - I don't like September.

For writing dates, we use the genitives:
Przyszedł tu drugiego września - He came here on the second of September.
Przyszedł tu drugiego września - He came here on September the second.

Dziś jest piąty września - Today is September the fifth (the fifth day of September)

WRONG: Dziś jest piąty wrzesień.
BECAUSE it means: Today is fifth September. (Like there were some Septembers, and today is the fifth).
