Hi,

I would like to support the Polish language in a software for a mobile device.
The number of keys on the software keyboard is fixed (31).

I do not speak Polish myself, and I would be very grateful if you could help me:

1. Did I forget any Polish character?

2. Do you have any recommendation to make the keyboard more user friendly for a Polish speaker?

Thank you greatly for your help,

Ben

I have done a screen capture of the keyboard layout of Polish keyboard on my Mac.
I popped it next to your image for comparison but unfortunately I had to reduce the size of the keyboard viewer. If you would like just the keyboard viewer in full size let me know. Hope it helps.

Hi Cjjc,

Thank you for your reply.

My problem is that I am limited to 31 keys in 3 rows. So I cannot match the normal Polish keyboard layout.
I tried to be as close as possible to the "Polish programmers" layout.

Do you think the way I did it would be user friendly?

Thank you for your help!

Ben

Ben, I am not Polish and I do not use the keyboard in the same sense as a native would so it is difficult for me to judge how user friendly it may be, I know on the iPhone keyboard you can hold down a key for 1 second and you will be presented with a slide up version of with many different letters such as Polish, Russian (cyrillic), Czech etc this may be an option for you as you are on a touch screen device correct? (I don't know about patents btw) I know it may seem like significant programming burden at first but it would retain the original layout and save the hassle of having to re-lay the keys whilst offering huge multilingual support.

There is a Polish mode on my iPhone and the keys are qwerty so maybe is won't be such a big difference.

I would wait for some more answers from natives of Poland.

:)

Thinking back to typewriter days, some Pol-Ams used to easily Polonise their US-keyboard typerwiters by replacing a mere three rarely used keys (like the fractions which can be made with the diagonal 1/2, the cent sign which could be made with a c and backspaced /, and the @ which was close to useless in the pre-email era).

All you needed to type Polish was £, Ż and a dead key containing the acute accent (')and (˛). You first struck the ' and then the letter to fit under it to get ć, ń, ó, ś and ź, adn teh ˛ and then the a or e to fit above it get ą and ę.

Dunno if this is possible on the keyboard you are referring to, but maybe it's worth a go.
