Life / Poland's greatest living person? - my nomination [10]

I then found this link for this lady....Irena Sendler, whom I think should be given international recognition

Sendler was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, but lost out to Al Gore, the former Vice-President of the United States.

If I bought one of their CD's for a mate, who is a Jazz obsessed DJ, which one would you recommend

Probably Skalpel or Konfusion.

Wojciech Kilar is another well known composer and pianist. He worked with many directors such as Francis Ford Coppola (Dracula - 1992), Roman Polanski (The Ninth Gate, The Pianist), Andrzej Wajda (Ziemia Obiecana (The Promised Land) - great movie). Krzysztof kieslowski (Przypadek - Blind Chance), Krzysztof Zanussi (Barwy ochronne (Camouflage), Spirala (Spiral))

Life / Polish art pictures [55]

we have a lot of much more intereting things in Poland

I agree. You can not forget about theatre or music, either. An experimental theatre company Teatr Ósmego Dnia from Poznan (I was lucky to see their spectacular open-life performance "Raport z Oblezonego Miasta" by Herbert in Sopot in 1986 or 87), avant-garde theatre Cricot 2 formed by Tadeusz Kantor (The Dead Class is one of the most famous plays) or Jerzy Grotowski's Teatr Laboratorium are just a few examples of well known Polish theatre companies.

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Krzysztof Penderecki and Witold Lutoslawski are great composers of classical music

Travel / My opinion on Gdansk and Poland after 11 days [45]

I was in Poland when quite a lot of forum members were not even born! It was twenty three years ago,

And I was a student at the University of Gdansk from 1982 to 1988. I lived in Sopot Kamienny Potok (very quiet and nice), Sopot, Gdansk Polanki, Gdansk Zabianka and Gdansk Brzezno. And to be honest, I think we are talking about two different cities. Yours seems to be taken from the horror movies. I only have good memories of living in Gdansk. None of my friends were murdered or robbed. I was very often taking a bus or LRT very late at night when coming home from parties or late studying and felt safe.

Travel / Skansen-Open Air Museums in Poland [5]

This summer , I visited the Etnographic Park (Skansen) in Sanok. It is one of the largest etnographical park in Poland and very unique open air museum. It gives insight into the culture of ethnic groups (Boyko, Lemko and other), once living in this region. Old wooden churches, inns, farm houses, granaries, windmills and mills (about 100 buildings from 18th-20th cc.) have been brought from the original villages and restored to original condition.
