Travel / Eating out in Gdansk [9]

Cristal?
Hmmm....i lived near but ive never tried eat there...

I'm not quite sure of the correct spelling. We went there on a whim one day only because the place has a sentimental meaning for us; my parents went there on their first day there.

And I can tell you, the fish, the potatoes, the salads.. it was to die for!

Damn.. getting hungry just thinking about it.. :)

Travel / Eating out in Gdansk [9]

In Gdansk-Wrzeszcz, there is a really great place called "Krystal" - My sister and I had a lunch there one day and dear God.. I have never had a better meal anywhere! Not too expensive at all, tasty, fresh.. and they also have a great salad bar (free with the meal - or so it was.)

Food / Can you buy Sweet Potatoes in Poland [9]

I found sweet potatoes in Poland when I was there in 2003 (I love sweet potato fries.. yummy.. :) ) In Polish they’re called BATATY. They’re not as popular in Poland I suppose as they are in North America but you can still get them.

Food / Kapusta and groch recipe [18]

Hmmm.. we always use about a cup of fresh tomatoes (chopped), some tomato paste, water, sugar, vinegar, chopped bacon, salt, pepper. We always end up with a "cabbage sauce" at the end.

But then again... every family, every person has their own recipe of preparing cabbage. Can you remember what colour it was or what it taste like? Can you ask your aunt?

Language / Help! I really want to learn the Polish language. [15]

I'll tell you something bdmskiwife. My husband is Canadian so since my whole family is Polish to the core, the poor guy has been trying to learn at least a little bit of the language. Just 3-4 months ago he bought himself a book (includes a CD). It's basically called "Teach yourself Polish" - complete audio CD program, written by Nigel Gotteri and Joanna Michalak-Gray. It's still quite a challenge, as with any language, but he is actually able to handle short conversations in Polish.

Funny thing.. not too long ago, my mom was trying to asking me something (in Polish of course) and for the love of God.. I could not understand what it was that she wanted from me. She must've repeated it about 4 or 5 times.. Finally, my husband rolled his eyes and told me "she wants to borrow your scarf!" Only instead of "szalik" (scarf) she used the word "apaszka" and.. lost me. :(

Anyways.. sorry for the blabbery-blab. Check if you can get that book. It's actually written quite nicely, it's for beginners. And ask your finacee for help..

Travel / Isn't Warsaw a Sh*thole? [20]

I was in Warsaw, for the very first time in my life, in 2003. To be honest, I wasn't overly impressed at first. It felt too.. americanized, almost lacking it Polishness (that's a new word :) ). However... Lazienki, the Old Town, Wilanow.. I can't find words that would come even remotely close to how I felt!

But I know where AntiMono is coming from. I think, once you live in a place, no matter how spectacular, how breathtaking, how attractive.. you live it each day and it just becomes exactly that - an every day thing, and every day view..

Perhaps you should take a weekend and re-discover Warsaw?

Travel / Places to visit Poland for the New Year? [30]

There is a very picturesque village near Tarnow, called Zalipie. If you want a little bit of a.. "travel back in time" you should definitely stop by there. Beskid Sadecki, gorgeous places to see, Piwniczna, Sucha Polana itd.

Krakow is a must.. Warsaw as well, Gdansk, Panorama Raclawicka in Wroclaw, and Niedzica. I believe that you can actually rent a room for the night in the Niedzica castle.. But I could be wrong..

Genealogy / Burak surname [3]

We have been looking for Jozef (Jozef) Burak - my great-grandfather, who permanently moved to the States in 1913. Jozef (Josef) Burak came from the village of Brzezowka in Galicja, Poland (then Austrian teritory), near Tarnow. We are trying to find his descendants, if any, or those of his brothers, Piotr (Peter) and Michal (Michael). This is what we have learnt so far but if you know of anyone or if you think we might be related.. let me know.

Jozef Burak, originally came to Ellis Island on July 14, 1903 on a ship called "Konigin Luise" and the port of departure was Bremen. He was about 35 years old and married. At that time he came to stay with a friend of his, Jan Bogacz, also from Brzezowka. Then on February 1, 1909, one of his brothers Piotr (Peter) Burak, came to the US (Ellis Island on a ship called "Neckar" through Bremen)to stay with Jozef. Piotr was 25 years old and single. We assume that is when Jozef Burak decided to return to Poland. A third brother, Michal (Michael) Burak, immigrated to the US, arriving at Ellis Island on July 2, 1910. The ship of travel was called "Amerika" and the port of departure was Hamburg. Michal was approx. 40 years old and married. Michal was staying with Piotr who then apparently lived in New York Mills. Then, on March 8, 1913 Jozef Burak immigrated to the United States. He came to Ellis Island on a ship called "Pennsylvania" and the port of departure was Hamburg. He came to stay with his brother Piotr (Peter) Burak. There is no mention of Michal Burak in the ship manifest. Seems that originally, when Piotr and Jozef came to Ellis Island in New York, their destination was Utica, NY. In the ship manifest, the only address of Piot Burak was "Yorkville, Box 328."
