Genealogy / Need photo from Wrzeszcz of childhood home. [53]

Sep 11, 09, 02:58 - Thread attached on merging:
Where do I get records for Wrzeszcz & Orunia Gdansk from 1920 to 2004?

My family is from Wrzeszcz and Orunia -Gdansk.

Does anyone know where I can write for Birth and Death records from 1920 up to 2004 ?

I understand there is a place that is an "archieve" for older records and another place where more current records are kept.

I really need the address and phone number Please if anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Well at least I know I can go with only a few words under my belt and manage in English.
I will only be in the main city anyways. Aside from a trip to a few cemeteries were I highly doubt I will need to talk to my relatives in Polish.

I do not know how they spelled Clemens in 1930, since it is in German I think it would by Klemens but at the time of his death it would still be Sirotzki, today it is Sirocki

his birth was around 1932 death 1938 approx. dad was young then.
he was buried there because my grandfather was the caretaker of the cemetery and was for 40 yrs.

the funeral was held at the family church

It makes very sad and angry to read the above post. My Uncle died at the age if 6 and "was" buried there. I was hoping I could locate the grave, or maybe a record.

How can anyone allow the destruction of sacred ground. Unbelievable.
Thank you for the information.

PS

who has the records for that cemetary, the church listed above?

I need information on
Clemens Sirotzki born 1930-1936 no exact dates father August Franz mother Anna

Can anyone help with this?????

Genealogy / Do Polish cemetaries have records [10]

I know about the 20 rental, that sucks. I just found out that the graves are still there, my cousin in tending to them.

I still want records. How do you find out if the LDS have the micro films for the town I need.
And if so who do I get them from.

thanks

Genealogy / Need photo from Wrzeszcz of childhood home. [53]

I understand its not always possible to take such a trip for a variety of reasons.

Medically is the first reason. Financially we can't afford a team of medical workers or I would be on the next plane out of this hell hole USA. I would have to look into getting him a current passport from Germany. He is not a US citizen. When we traveled to Germany in 1977 he was not granted a visa to come into Poland??? I do not know the reason, I was to young. Crushed him to be so close but yet so far.

I am sure the paperwork is an issue and it would take some time. But then there is the $$.

If I could get my father back to his home I would, believe me. But I can't.
So I do what I can for him by bringing his home to him. His eyes still tell you the pain of being drafted at age 14 , captured and spent 5 years as a POW and then never allowed to go home. he is a tough old man but that child I see ! Breaks my heart...........

If anyone knows that cematary name in Bretow ( he says that was the name) let me know?
Maybe I could contact someone to see if graves exist.

don't get too caught up in thinking about the current situation or you will be disappointed

Thank you.
I will be happy enough to be in my dads home city.
I planned on letting the cousin know I was coming and if the invitation is given I will go. but it is not the basis of my visit. And if I do not see them that's fine to. I will not push.

I learned to take what I can and that relationships with lost family is a hard thing for some.It satisfies me enough to know that I have put the puzzle of my family together. !

They think that because we live in the USA we are rich.. Ha. I am far from that, we grew up very poor. I work just as hard as everyone else in the world for the life I have.

my cousin is 48 and I have spoken to 1 of her boys via email. He is just as bad. They don't see the importance of it, because they grew up there. Where as my dad missed out. War time tore the family apart.

So I do my own research. It's kind of hard being in another country too.
I'll check out that link. The last name has so many different spellings. I don't understand it but it is spelled 2 different ways on 1 polish document for my grandfather. The old German way was changed and I can't keep up with the Polish ones.

This forum is my first contact with people from Gdańsk or Poland, that I can actually communicate with. Thank God !
It has taken 10 yrs just to locate the cousin. Sad that relatives don;t wanna help out. We are all Blood.
So when I visit Poland it ought to interesting to visit them and see the reaction.

Cjj

(my car broke down yesterday :) that's what comes of driving a clunker)

Good luck with that. And enjoy your vacation !

I will check out the link you sent and I will try to find the new name of the cemetary.
It was across the street from another "soldiers cemetary" called Siberhammer. ANyone with info on those send it my way please.

Whats sad is that I have located a cousin from Danzig but they speak no english. I have written them in German & Polish ,sent them family photos but you think they could answer a simple question? Nope ! They don't even answer period.

This thread restored my faith in humanity.

--Amen !!

I thank God for this Forum

He can not fly , he has had to many strokes and has an enlarged heart and needs 2 new knee joints but cant have the surgery , not healthy enough. fly is out and I do not think he could handle a ship. He is just not able.

I took the photos to my dad. He could not believe that the apartment has not changed, he lived on the first floor, the exact photos you took of the lower level was his birth home.

He says thank you so very much. I am going to add them to the photo book I made him and I put them on a slide show DVD so he can sit and watch them on TV. the DVD turned out great. He started talking about everything from his childhood. amazing how well his memory is.

He talks about a few places still in old Langfuhr, his old church, it was called Herz-Jesu Kirche, it was just down a few streets from Lelewela street

Mostly: just outside old Langfuhr:
Bretowe cemetary where is mom ,dad and brothers are buried. He keeps asking if the graves still exsist but my cousin never answers the question. which means they most likely do not. He was not able to come to the funerals ever. dad had a rough life. I try to get him as much as I can from his city, no one should go through life with out photos and memories. so this I provided him.

Anything from those places that you can get photos of would be nice, but you have done so much. I appreciate more then I can ever put into words. He never thought he would see that home again. he misses Danzig so much.

He pulled out the 1 and only photo of my grandmother and put my photo next to to it friday. I look just like his mother. I had to pull strings just to get the photo of his mother from a cousin. Like pulling teeth. so sad. anyway sorry for rambling.

CJJ you should email me. would like to stay in contact with you.

Genealogy / "-ski" last names more desirable in Poland? [28]

In the Freie Stadt Danzig or parts of Poland which belonged to the Reich in 1772-1918 they may have been fairly frequent.

That would be the time of my grandfathers place & birth so makes sense then, they were also German speaking.

How about " zki " ??

My maiden name ends in zki and my father is from Danzig 1929.
After the war my grandfather was forced to change it to " cki " , my Aunt's was changed to cka. So yes for female & male are different. Thank you for putting that question in my head to rest, never knew this.

In the usa it is still the original as on my fathers birth certificate as - zki

Travel / Help with travel to Gdansk [30]

cjj,

I found the street on the map from the link you gave me and that is the street. I matched it up to the old map I have with the old name on it.

Thanks and if you do indeed remember the camera it would be awesome. My dad knows the towns isnt the same but he knows the house is still there.

He left at age 14 to go to war and never returned, not by his choice. But his family remained there.
He has no photo of the house he was born in. In fact 10 of the 13 children where born in that house. To give my dad such a gift would bring tears to his eyes. I was able to make him a photo book but the only thing lacking was that.

I can't wait to visit Poland ! Waiting on SLOW USA passport...............................

Travel / Help with travel to Gdansk [30]

Thank you to all I feel more comfortable with going ahead with my travels.......

When I arrive in my fathers hometown and see my cousins I will Hug,kiss and cry. We will communicate somehow. Maybe I can find a translator, but I am not rich. I am saving pennies for this trip of my life time.

Does Gdansk have an international airport to fly to? Any recommendations on a certain Hotel?

I am planning on at least a week but I highly doubt that will be long enough. Any thoughts.
My main travels will be the city itself and what was Langfur and Oliwa. With these should I rent a car.?
