Language / misleading differences between Polish and English languages [92]

I remember my first Polish winter, and the person I was speaking to mentioned the "Fatalny pogoda". I of course understood the English equivalent - fatally as in deadly or lethal. Fatalny means dreadful, fatal means śmiertalny!

Food / Polish cuisine and eating habits missed by Poles abroad [16]

I'm Polish/Australian, born to Polish parents. I didn't discover Polish cuisine until 1999, when I went to Poland to meet my cousins etc. I grew up on Australian/International cuisine. There are few foods from Poland that I enjoy.

Bigos - but only once a month or so, I usually cook about a 2.5 kg batch and freeze it in smaller portions. Too much and I get the runs.

Kluski z serem (yum) a lot of work, and mess in the kitchen, but worth it.
Zrazy zawiandzany Beef Rolladen with gherkins also a lot of work. But also yummy.
Placki ziemnaczone - Potato pancakes Food processors make this a lot less work. Eat them sweet or savoury.
Żurek - It takes a week to make, by the time you make the kwas, or longer if it doesn't ferment properly, and goes off. It means you have to start again.

The food I miss most when I'm in Poland - Roast Lamb or even lamb chops. I had some this year in my Father's home town, but Poles don't understand Carving meat in fine slices, but instead give you large hunks of meat, which can tend to make it tough.

Food / Poland and the Juice [35]

Juice in Poland. Something unnatural comes to mind. They're all UHT, nothing fresh.
On the whole juices are not popular in Europe. In Australia you can buy a large OJ in Hungry Jacks (Burger King to the rest of the world) in Europe you can only buy from BK 200ml juices? What the f*ck!! I drank a variety of juices in Poland, but nothing beats Nippys fresh fruit juices from South Australia (a state of Australia).

Food / Łowicz BEST JAM EVER [23]

£owicz no longer makes jams. They now make low sugar jams, which do no taste the same. In fact I found it impossible to find real jam in Poland.

Travel / One thing i Really hate about most Restaurants in Poland! [14]

The thing I hate about restaurants in Poland, is that everything is served with surówka. I always say "bez surówka, proszę!".

I am not sure about restaurants but I had to ask my aunt to not serve my vegetables with a sauce made of melted butter and breadcrumbs.

Mind you, the way they murder vegetables in Poland is criminal. They are boiled to oblivion. You cannot eat them with a fork, you need a spoon.
