Love / Do Polish men have a problem with Tatto's on women? [47]

When I first came to Poland, people sometimes used to stare at me. When I asked the family why this was, they said it was because I had a tattoo and earrings, which were associated with prisoners.

Within a few years it seemed everyone, male and female, had them.

The lads don't seem to be wearing earrings so much these days but tattooes are still popular.

I've noticed a lot of young women have a design on the lower back, just above the waistline.

If it feels right. Do it.

Language / Television to learn Polish/English. What should I be watching? [33]

Shelley,

Yes. Just let me know a few days before you get here.

For those learning English, who have BBC Prime, use Teletext page 888 for English subtitles. Then you can listen and read. It will help you to catch some of the vocabulary. I don't know if this works with cable TV. We have satellite TV.

Rafal Dutkiewicz appears on BBC World - Hardtalk, 9th October.

He will be talking about the EU and work/jobs.

Check your TV listings for programme info.

News / What makes Poland different from other countries [55]

yeahIKnow,

Just a thought. If you want to find the essence of Poland then I think Christmas time might be the time to find it. Traditions and way of life are very different at Christmas. Where else in the world, on the coldest day, would your mother say "Put your coat on, open the windows and clean them" The rest of the world would think us mad. :) It's about how we do things at this time of year.

Regarding your second question in post#1. I'd like to see more tourists in winter. For skiing, traditional music around a log fire, the list goes on.

Also, are you aware of wildlife tours which are available in Poland. Fishing holidays. There are also battlefield tours.

Language / Television to learn Polish/English. What should I be watching? [33]

Frank,

It's a programme I'd love to see. I've heard stories of people being offered a bounty to come back. Also, some of the people here are more than a little pi**ed off because those who return are being offered higher wages than those who stayed. There are a lot of people here who don't want them back for this reason.

When you come in November I'll buy you a beer in Kelly's bar.

I remember when I lived in Ireland [age 5] my mum used to get annoyed with me because
every second word was "sure" or "surrrrre'

'what's going to attract people to Poland' As I'm sure you know there are many people who can't find Poland on a map. The first thing that is going to attract them is an awarensess of something different. The way of life, elements of culture [people in national costume for example] music, a sense of history, etc.

"a second London" I don't want a second London. I want Wroclaw to use London as a model to attract visitors. But you need something to bring them here. Why would anyone want to come all the way from England to visit a church or park. We need people to sell the idea that they [visitors] will find something different. Then when they are here they will soak up the essence of the country.

What that essence is, I can't define.

Here is an example of what we have to contend with.
"Oh, Rynek. It is beautiful. But then again it's not much different to any German city".

The point I'm making here is that visitors to Poland have already seen something similar and we have to educate them that there is more to it.

News / What makes Poland different from other countries [55]

yeahIKnow,

Tourism seems to be doing well in Poland. Just look at Krakow.

But, here in Wroclaw we have a local government who are only interested in bringing in Foreign Business concerns. Banks, IT developers and so on.

Tourism doesn't seem to be on the agenda. You won't hear many different languages spoken in Wroclaw town centre.

There is nothing really special to put Wroclaw on the map. No alternative architecture, no big wheel [as in London ] Nothing for people to say "Wow ! I've got to see this place"

To prove my point try to find posts on these boards where people say "I must go to Wroclaw"

That said. Wroclaw is a beautiful city. But it is a city for young people who are only interested in "Rynek" and afternoon strolls along the river. You can do all the sights in one weekend and this shouldn't be the case for the fourth biggest city in Poland. For size Wroclaw would be in the top five when compared to British cities

Don't get me wrong, I love this city. It's just that it has so much potential and no-one is doing anything to capitalize on it.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who'll come back at me and say "What about ........"

"Wroclaw The Meeting Place" [yeah, for business]

"Wroclaw The City Of One Hundred Bridges" [and who outside Wroclaw knew that]

London is said to make more money from tourism than business. You would think that they could make a little more effort to make tourism work here.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

This tradition is alive and well in the countryside around where I live.

Those who choose to go mushroom picking are like the secret service. They will give you no clues as to where the best places to go are. You can be neighbours with someone for a lifetime and they still won't help. Otherwise, these folks will gossip about anything.

Mr Cogito,

Now that you have checked I can see that you are learning. The difference between you and the rest of us here is that we all knew the facts, before you started your arguement.

A little less shouting and a little more revision and I might agree on some of your points.

Mr cogito,

You failed to answer my question. Come on, admit your failure. It takes a strong man to say 'sorry, I'm wrong'. We will admire you for it.

When you have something valid to say. I'll respond.

Mr Cogito,

I think you will find that William the Conqueror was Norman not French.

Also, you will find that King Canute had some Polish heritage. So when you mock the Royalty of England you are mocking, to some extent the kings of Poland.

Were all Polish kings Polish ? I don't think so.

Go check your history.

Sorry forgot.

You should also Google Clementene Sobieski.

Patriarse,

Your first and second posts focused on Germany specifically. If you can't remember that what is the point of debating you on the subject. You have expossed yourself as an idiot.

Goodnight.

Bielany: Get a life. We have many shopping centres here. It is part of the policy of
the local government to invite companies from other nations. Not just Germany.

You really should check previous posts from contributors. Unlike you, some of us know what we are talking about.

Patriot,

How can you be a patriot. If you were you would stay here and fight back.

That is: use your vote and challenge MPs. Try to redress the balance.

But no, you have run away. You are not a patriot you are a coward.

There are Germans here and that's about all I agree with.

You will find that some of those Germans are actually working for Poles.

Strange but true. I have this from Polish and German friends who have experienced it.

Please, consider the employment situation in Germany and think about it.

News / Polish Workers Abroad on BBC World [5]

Iwona,

This was a news story shown on TV today [Monday]. It didn't last long but it explained a lot.

It was about Polish workers moving to England.

The mayor of Wroclaw wants them back.

You don't want to know my opinion of [Dutkiewicz] the mayor.

News / Polish Workers Abroad on BBC World [5]

Monday 18th September.

If you have 'BBC World' they are running an article about Polish workers. It gives some insight into the job market in Poland and why young people are leaving for the UK.

It also talks about the mayor of Wroclaw who is on a campaign to bring Poles home.

Has anyone seen this yet. If so I'd like your comments.

Life / Indian moved to Poland [532]

polaca,

I am arguing about the method of that education. I believe that students should be given more space to think for themselves. Have you ever said " I think you are wrong because....."

In Poland we have a particular style of education, which does work, but I think could be better.

Marzena,

"I don't agree with you". That's OK.

But. I have heard too many stories from students here in Wroclaw who have to follow the published works of their lecturer and ignore those of the guy next door.
