Language / Poles! How do you cope with English phonetics versus English spelling? [37]

I'd like to go to Malta, but hearing them speak English would just be depressing since Maltese is such an interesting language.

Very true, but such a mixture of Italian, Arabic, Latin and one or two others, it's quite a difficult language to get to grips with (believe me, I have tried).

The same with Polish, to read a sentence written in Polish is quite frightening to a non speaker...............!

Bartolome:
Just ask for anything in English to an average Maltese in the street to find out.

i surely will

I have been to the beautiful island of Malta many times, and have had many instances where I walk into a busy shop, ask for something from the shop assistant, upon hearing my language, the other customers in the shop started to converse in English. Yes, this really happened!

Love / In love with polish cleaning woman, but don't speak an OUNCE of polish :( [57]

If all else fails with the lovely Eva, just flash her a nice smile and a little wave, surely that is understood in most languages as "Hi, I am pleased to see you!"

Or, just buy the girl a coffee..................

Please keep us informed as to your progress, you have us all enthralled now!....:-)

UK, Ireland / Polish people in an english army [85]

Maybe, who fought for who matters not, the fact remains that the Polish were on "our" side in the fight against a fascist dictator, and heaven forbid anything like that should rear it's ugly head again, I am sure that the Polish would do the same again. My main point is in reply to the chap who said the Poles can't/won't fight is totally invalid! They can, and they did!

Language / Poles! How do you cope with English phonetics versus English spelling? [37]

A bit of advice from any Polish friends would be appreciated here. I have volunteered myself to attend a small and quite new club in the town where I work, the aim of this club is to bring together both Polish immigrants and English locals with the aim of helping our Polish cousins to better their English, and to assist them with day to day things that us Brits take for granted, like signing on with a doctor, a trip to hospital or filling up with petrol etc. Has anyone got any basic tips to be of help to them without sounding too patronising?I really don't want to appear as if I am trying to help a 3 year old with potty training, do I?

Thanks. Neil.

the poles couldnt cut it in the sas. poles are not known for their fighting skills

Hundreds of Polish people gave their lives fighting for the British during WW2, and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude for that fact! Would YOU fight for your own country, then go fight for another one? No, you would run away with your tail between your legs!

UK, Ireland / Views of Poles in UK on Bulgarians/Romanians coming here? [62]

I work in a town that has a LOT of Polish, Latvian and Lithuanian people, and I am sorry to say that I agree with an earlier post about the high percentage of crimes committed by our Eastern European cousins. The majority of these crimes are drink/driving related or other motoring offences. Perhaps Polish law regarding the motorist is a lot less strict than English law.I have NO problem with them coming over here to work, and the women are stunning, but PLEASE, behave yourselves and play nicely!
