I would say it's safe but I would always bring someone with me. From what I've seen and experienced, Lodz is a relatively safe city. Just don't go walking around allies at 2 in the morning. :)

You can go to Manufactura. That's if you've got some money to spend. When I was there they've always had cool stuff going on there.

You may be thinking of St. Marys Basilica. But im not sure.... I've been in there once and was like... WOW! it's soo huge. But the Oliwa Cathedral... I don't think it's the biggest. But what I do know is that it has the biggest pipe organ in Europe.
