Life / Illegal drugs enjoyed by many of the young male Poles. Availability? [24]

It used to be. Not now tho.

I think it is still big. When I was in Poland I saw some people in some states because of wódka and I think it's easy to draw an invisible line in your head into what you class as a drunken bum and a crack head.

Someone who has told you that is as knowledgeable as yourself.

Well I'm sorry. Did I claim to be an authority? No. I merely stated what I have been told and what I have seen so please no subliminal insults.

Life / What is kolęda? [11]

Which one do you mean?

Annual visit of the priest from your parish.

When does this happen? Any set date?

I'm curious and I'd like to know if there is something that makes this take place on this very night?

Food / Eggs - how do you like yours? Poached? Unfertilised? [60]

Did you have any eggs when you were in Poland? (Trying to keep this thread out of Random Lounge)

No I did not, I stuck to Nudle, Milka, Barszcz (Czerwona), Chleb and assorted meats.

Aswell as eating out of course. :) Couldn't resist this....

Language / Touch screen Polish keyboard for mobile devices [6]

My problem is that I am limited to 31 keys in 3 rows. So I cannot match the normal Polish keyboard layout.
I tried to be as close as possible to the "Polish programmers" layout.

Ben, I am not Polish and I do not use the keyboard in the same sense as a native would so it is difficult for me to judge how user friendly it may be, I know on the iPhone keyboard you can hold down a key for 1 second and you will be presented with a slide up version of with many different letters such as Polish, Russian (cyrillic), Czech etc this may be an option for you as you are on a touch screen device correct? (I don't know about patents btw) I know it may seem like significant programming burden at first but it would retain the original layout and save the hassle of having to re-lay the keys whilst offering huge multilingual support.

There is a Polish mode on my iPhone and the keys are qwerty so maybe is won't be such a big difference.

I would wait for some more answers from natives of Poland.

Language / Touch screen Polish keyboard for mobile devices [6]

I have done a screen capture of the keyboard layout of Polish keyboard on my Mac.
I popped it next to your image for comparison but unfortunately I had to reduce the size of the keyboard viewer. If you would like just the keyboard viewer in full size let me know. Hope it helps.

Language / What exactly all these grammatical terms mean! - feeling frustrated [19]

I think I must have been asleep during grammar lessons at school.

I think I was outside smoking. doh!

Interesting that you mention the instrumental case, that's probably one of the easiest!

I just picked one at random! I don't really understand any at the moment.

Take some lessons

English or Polish?
I have no opportunity to do Polish where I live. (English countryside)

I think it is still early days for you and a point will soon come when you will be happy with the progress you've made and all the hard work you've already done.

I think I need to have patience and it's annoying me but you are right and I'm not one to give up easily.

Language / What exactly all these grammatical terms mean! - feeling frustrated [19]

Hi everyone,

As some of you know I'm trying to learn Polish and lately I've been learning alot of words such as days, months, colours, foods etc but I seem to be struggling with what direction I need to take my learning next. I know I should be trying to learn about grammatical cases and this will help me to understand more right? My problem is this I was never great at English at school and I can't seem to wrap my head around what exactly all these grammatical terms mean! I go to wiki and look up instrumental case but it just seems to confuse me! Every time I read it I end up clicking through to another link as I aren't quite sure what nominative is ect ect and I just seem to go around in circles!

do I need to relearn English?
is this common?
am I too stupid to learn this stuff?

Love / meaning of receiving empty text [21]

I send blank texts.

Usually to attract somebodys attention or to provoke a initial response text if you have fallen out with them and you aren't speaking - it works quite well :)

UK, Ireland / How to get cheaper texts UK to Poland? [5]

Are you using the websites to send free texts? Also have you checked with the network to see what packages they have on your mobile? pay a little extra on T-Mobile and get cheaper texts to PL but it still costs me alot.

It's worth it though, mostly.

Language / Do Polish Movies Help learn the language? [60]

Can anybody recommend some Polish movies which I can download and then find English subtitles? I like action and mafia movies but I think childrens movies would also be good for me.

Life / POLES' ENGLISH COMPARED TO EUROPE AS A WHOLE? [39]

I dont see a lot of people here in britain speaking foreign language

That's because we have the superiority complex of thinking that "oh we speak English we don't need to learn another language"

At school I learned French and to me it was a complete waste of time and effort I did not like France nor plan to go there so I was never interested in the language.

I think Poles are set into 2 groups. Those who will speak English and speak it well and those who will never speak it to any kind of decent level. I do also think that learning English for Poles should be relatively easy as their own language is difficult with it's genders and 7 cases.

All IMO of course.

:)
