Torq,if you liked Gettysburg(the movie) find a copy of Gods and Generels, its based on a book by the same author and is a kind of prequel to Gettysberg, very talky, and rather dry,most of the dialogue seems to come straight from peoples diaries or letters and comes across as a bit stillted but its worth a look. Nunchuka or whatever your called,Id suggest going to your local 2nd grade history class or maybe buy the "Big Bumper coloring book of the civil war"......

Oops,you missed the irony,there really should be an emoticon for that :) Simply a comment on the fact that people still feel the need to wring apologies out of people born decades after events took place. The alternative,extreme loony left view would be ,yes,you should apologies to the natives,after all,colonisation of someone elses country is just as bad 150 years after the first wave isnt it? ;)

The soviet union was in the midst of a civil war when Poland tried its luck at an eastward expansion.The army defeated on the banks of the vistula was hardly the same entity as the huge RKKA of the 1940s. I wouldnt know what happened to General Sosobowski later in his life,what I do know is that most Doctors who had served in 1stPolish airborne worked as Family Doctors in my county in England,one of them was a neighbour of mine for a time and let me tell you he was respected and rather well off financialy,I guess you make your way in this life how the cards are delt,for every sad tale of failure re post war Poles you have a tale of succes,the Polish RAF Air vice Marshal,the first forgein born person to rise to that rank etc etc...

History / Who here lost out because of WW2? [9]
Interesting story Softsong. Ozi,a year or so ago during the course of my work I was in the home of an elderly Polish gent,as you'd expect I had a good chat with him. It turned out that although he was as Polish as Bigos he and his family had been considered as "ethnic Germans" ,quite ironic really as his Father had been killed in the first days of September during the battle of Bzura fighting the nazis. This old fella,as a 15 year old boy had been forced to leave Poland in 45,had tried germany,hated it as he wasnt a german and ended up in Yorkshire eventually working in a coal mine and starting a large family here.
Just before this degenerates into the usual recriminations and counter recriminations I found this on another forum if anyone is interested. As a point of reference,the dodgy living conditions mentioned in the articale were not something exclusive to non natives,most people in the UK didnt have central heating in homes untill the late 70s.

Speaking as a " Northern Monkey" I can see where Krzysztof is coming from with the question but lets face it,when your talking about a black guy on what is probably a fairly primitive TV station(has anyone seen Nigerian TV?) by western standards then its probably safe to assume that if he did use the term Monkey it sure as s*** was meant as a rascist remark considering the long history of equating dark skin and african heratage with simians.
The question is though,as stupid and offensive to some as his remarks were,were they said in private,if so,is this not a prime example of the new Thought Crime? A private remark,said off camera was enough to get Maggie Thatchers daughter fired from the BBC,I may hate her mum but Carol seemed a nice enough bird and are thoughts or throw away comments more important than ones actions?

Did he say this in Public,did he go on Polish TV and call Black people monkeys? If these rascist veiws do harm to a country who is responsable for this,the person who may or may not have said this in private or the person who decides to make it public? Of course this only works for thought crimes,other "whistle blowers" are an exception and normaly positive. Is this man in his day to day working life on a Polish TV station really going to affect the working lives or employment prospects of many/any people of African descent? It would be different in a more "multicultural " sociaty but in a 99% white one,whats the biggie?

Ok ,in his case,Guilty as charged then,still interested if people think there is a difference between private thoughts and words and public deeds and actions though?
Im sure people will either cry rascist or hypocrite when I say that,even though as people may know Im one of the first to call out bigots on this forum of course Im only human and in private occasionally have moments of bigotry myself,ie,cut up by a driver,if he's white he's a "stupid c**t!",if I spot he's black or asian say he's a "stupid black/asian c**t!" . Am I and the many people Im sure are like me as "bad" as those who spout garbage in public and do those people really deep down believe they are from a "superior race" or like me do they moments after an irational bigoted thought or word regret their stupidity? And I mean in private,not regreting being caught just regreting the thought?

Thats the big problem,that these people must know it probably isnt a good career move to spout trash like this,but do it anyway,it speaks volumes for their levels of self control and general emotional maturity doesnt it. I personally dont like rascist views,I probably hold a few deep down but thats not the point,day to day I try to be colour blind and certainly dont see any inherant superiority in any one skin tone but do see superior "cultures" or aat least norms of behaiviour, islams treatment of women for example I abhore,doesnt mean I hate all muslims,I just wish theyd get out the 14th century now and again.
If all negative views about other races/cultures whatever are proscribed and subject to legal actions this does not drive thoughts and ideas from peoples minds,it just drives it underground. So instead of open dialogue sociaty seems to be breeding simmiring resentments that simply dont get an open forum and a chance to be debated publicaly.

I may be wrong but,from experience it always seems to be people with the least knowladge of "their" culture and certainly a very low input into "their" culture who bleat about losing it.

Strip farming,love flying into Poland as you can look out the window and spot when you cross the german/polish border,one minute its modern agro corp wilderness,the next its the 16th century:)

Do I want my country flooded by outsiders,a mad dash of hordes of non Britains coming in via the tunnel or Victoria coach station,no I bloody dont,but the problems of immigration faced here is numbers not culture. The million + Poles turning up in less than 12 months was the biggest pain in the arse vis a vis immigration this country has ever had to put up with.
