History / Kresy-Siberia, Galicia [16]

Hi Juli,

as you probably niticed it is Galicja not Galacja, and Eagle is right Lwów was the capital of Galicja under Austrian Partition. In the time between WW (World War's) Lwów was one of the bigest cities in Poland, after Warszawa it was biggest Polish Cultural Center.

Eastern part of Poland between WW is called "KRESY"which biggest cities and cultural centers was Wilno, Brześć and Lwów. Unfortunately after pact Ribentrop-Molotov, Russian Red Army took over those lands in September 1939. After that those territories doesn't come back to Poland.

Katyn is quite far from Galicia and Ukraine. If you check on maps.google.com Katyn it is near to Smolensk, close to present Belarus.
