USA, Canada / Moving to Quebec City [3]

Quebec, while a beautiful city, is quite small and not very diverse. I do not think that there is a Polish community in Quebec City.

In Montreal, there is only about 20,000 Polish people so I would imagine that the community in Quebec would be virtually non-existant.

And yes, learn French as quickly as possible! You cannot get by in English in Quebec City. Only perhaps in the tourist areas.

Sorry.

Genealogy / Surname: Skobalo/Skobało [6]

Hello!

Has anyone heard of the surname Skobalo/Skobało? Is it Polish or Russian/Ukrainian (as I was told)? Yet, my father says it could be an obscure Polish name "derived from something else", however, he thinks everything is Polish!

Kidding aside, this was my maternal grandmother's maiden-name. Her mother's maiden name was Przystawska. I was told that there is a history of Polish/Ukrainian/Russian marriages in this branch of the family.

My grandmother was born in Lubeck, Germany as Anna Skobala and moved to Warsaw where she was taken as a forced labourer during the early years of the war. She "worked" in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She was Polish-speaking in terms of mother tongue, but also spoke German. She married my grandfather, a Russian in Paris and he died approximately three years later. She had five siblings, who she never heard of again and one of which was a priest. I am conducting research on this branch of my family, however, its a dead end. She had beautiful pale eyes unfortunately, I cannot remember if there were blue or green, yet they were striking. Just curious if this rings a bell with anyone. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
