Genealogy / Please can you help me? Searching grandmothers family, name "Karolak" [5]

I am desperately trying to find out more about my grandmothers family. Ill explain. After being liberated after the war she came to the UK met and married a Ukrainian man and stayed put. She was very secretive and it wasnt until after she died we learnt that she was in fact a jewish lady who dropped that and converted to roman catholocism when she came to the UK, she also had three names and no one seems to be able to tell us which one was real??!!!

So if we start with her family name 'Karolac' and I run a search on it, it doesnt appear to exist and more over I cant find an origin for it.

I have a date of birth, a place of birth and know she lived in Lodz all her life until she was relocated to the UK.

Does anyone recognise the surname? Do any of you know where its from?

Am I being totally unrealistic in trying to find anything out?
Has anyone done this with success? I know my mum who now feels as though she is losing all her Polish heratige would love to trace anyone from her family if she could I mean my nan lived, so its stands to reason that maybe some of her family did also?

I would be very grateful of you or anyone you know could help

Thanks guys

Mel xx

Sorry I misspelt the name its Karolak also I have now found her certificate of registration is there anyway I can use the number to trace?

Genealogy / Do I look Polish? (Part II -- Much more detail than other topic) [109]

I found this thread really interesting...
Im always being told how eastern european I look and asked so many times where im from. I always found that daft, I mean I look like me. In my eyes a white lass, very dull.

Im a brit (Well at least thats what I say too complex to go into the whole, well my mother is this and my father is that etc etc)

But upon testing for a blood disorder I have and being told its far more common in the east I asked my mum who is polish how much Polish do I have? She said, far more than your brother. I thought he had the most as he has the dark hair and dark eyes whereas (though I dye my hair dark) I am fairer and have blue eyes. My polish friend said to me oh yes you have the dirty skin!!!!

I was well PO'd!!!!
But its true there is a colouring that so isnt English its like a tinted beige hahaha (pic on profile) colour especially on my hands/knuckles. Its only when I hold them against my mothers that I see its normal, for us. Now im older Im certainly proud of it, it sets me apart from the typical English roses, nice as they are.

If I were to meet you in the street though I wouldnt know. But then if its just the grandparents maybe its quite diluted? Youve a lovely face wherever it comes from :) And its nice youre proud of your roots. My other friend is part Polish and doesnt want to know about it at all. He says its not who he is. But both his parents are Poles and it is who he is (unless theres something they arent telling him) Im sure he will regret it when he has children. I cant wait to take my son to Poland and show him everything.

Ive rambled enough see what happens when its Saturday and Jeremy Kyle isnt on???!!!!

Genealogy / Grandchildren of Polish Immigrants [26]

Yes I am the same though my Mother is Polish too. I do see myself as British but I definately carry some traits from the Polish lot and Im proud of them too. I am fortunate that I was told plenty about Poland and was spoken to in Polish for much of my childhood and even my father made an effort to learn despite him being VERY British.

I can totally see what you want to know more and its a very ignorant thing to suggest that knowing your heritage doesnt shape who you are. There are so many people who were adopted that claim they only felt able to know themselves when they knew where they came from.

And are you SERIOUSLY saying that if youre born in a country thats where your roots lie?
Id love to see you tell a muslim that. They build their own communities that are so cultural that I can say in all honesty you wouldnt know you were in England when you step foot in them NOIMM.

There are loads of Scotsmen I know that wouldnt see you as Scottish if your ancestry didnt origionte from there. Your bloodline wouldnt be considered pure.

Im sure that would make you feel like crap when youve lived there your whole life and have a stunning accent belonging there too.

All people are made up of all places. Few have pure bloodlines dating back to the Romans in this country and for most they dont care and will never investigate but for some it will be very important to do so and you shouldnt stomp on that, It isnt your place.

Good luck in your search I hope you find out some wonderful things that make you proud to be a part American Part Pole x
