Language / When to use Ręka / Dłoń [14]

When do you use dłoń and when do you use ręka?

1. Dłoń refers to the palm, only and it is less colloquial.
2. Ręka is more general term as it can refer to both a palm and whole limb.
Podnieście ręce (meaning whole limbs)
Podaj mi swoją rękę (meaning a palm)
You can also say podaj mi swoją dłoń, which is less colloquial as i said (but mind you it is not very formal)

Life / Do Poles do hand shaking EVERY TIME they see friends? [30]

Well, we do shake hands and it is the right thing to do when you greet the other person. Some dos and donts about hands shaking:)

-dont shake hand for too long;), and dont clench too tight
-smile and maintain eye-contact

-a woman gives her hand to a man first, elder person to younger one, employer to employee
-dont shake over the table

good luck with your hand shaking:)

UK, Ireland / Is is very hard to get a job as live in tutor for summer only in the UK? [9]

Hi, I hope I am in the right section, it is just an inquiry for now, as it is too early to post an advertisement (but should anybody be interested now, please pm me, of course:).

So my question: is there demand in UK for live in tutors or au pairs (or nanny in my case as I am 30 something), for a short term employment, I mean summer only. My logic tells me that it should be because children dont go to school at that time and somebody needs to occupy them. Am I right?

I would imagine that they would want more committment than just the summer.

Yes, I am afraid you are right... but I am a school teacher and have to be back in Poland in September. Summer is the only time to improve my spoken English. I consider putting an ad on a gumtree, anyway.

these two groups have always most to say.

yes these ppl were the ones who lost out on this open door policy ,the majority of people don't want an open door policy and they have every right to comment on issues affecting them in their own country just like the poles don't like the rising number of chinese moving to poland yet they can say something , our sleazy slime politicians have neglected the only people who voted for them , new labour new danger i know so so much that that is now true[/quote]

huh?

Language / Anyone use "SERWUS"? [46]

"serwus

It is not commonly used now. It was popular in the 70s due to a radio programme Serwus, jestem nerwus
