Hello guys,

The Skilled worker program, under which you could immigrate by calculating the points on the government web site does not exist anymore (since Feb. 2008).

All applications sent after February/08, will not be processed. The applications took 4 years, and will take that long for those who already submitted theirs before February. In addition, if your application does not have promised employment with a company in Canada, it will be refused, no matter how many points you have.

The Canadian Experience class in in effect now. You need to come to Canada as a foreign worker or a student and work for two years or study for two years and work for one year. Afterwards, you may apply for permanent residence. This program came into effect on September, 2008. It's about a month old now.

Yes - workers need to work for two years. Students need to study for two years and work the third year. They get an open work permit after they complete their studies.

This is one of those times in life, where you need to find an immigration lawyer. One visit will give you all the information you need. Then you can at least file all the necessary documents and save money. Pay for the first visit though, and get as much information as possible.

I think the topic here is more superstition than cultutal differences.

I got a cultural difference:

I live in Canada and just discovered something about birthday parties in restaurants.

I was invited a birthday party in a restaurant with the words "I'm inviting you to my birthday party in a restaurant."

It was a very expensive restaurant.
I arrived 15 late and all my friends were sitting down. The birthday girl ( a Polish girl, born outside Poland), coached us to order wine to have a toast, and order beer, and another beer, and lots of goodies. Well great! So we did. All the Polaks were very moody though. I had no idea why.

At the end of the evening I found out why the gloomy faces, when everyone got up and went one by one to pay for their tab. What tab?

It turns out that before I arrived, the birthday girl announced to everyone that they would be paying for themselves. All the Polish Canadians were a bit shocked. Especially the ones who did not have the kind of money to pay at such a posh restaurant.

We all ended up buying her a gift, paying our tab and a manadatory 15% tip, because were a group of 15 or more.

That was one expesive party. After doing some research I discovered this is normal in Canada. The girl was actually raised in Canada and what she did is normal among Canadians.

I would consider this a cultural shock to Polish People. It was to me.:-)

I went to Poland and had to pay for using the restaurant's washroom. Paying for a public washroom is one thing I don't like, but paying for the use of a bathroom at a restaurant where you just paid for services....well..isn't that against sanitation laws or something? Shouldn't each full services restaurant provide a washrooms for free? That's Poland for ya! Pay up or pee yourself..lol

They still occur in Poland. When we invite to gests any celebration, our guests know right away that we are footing the bill.

Sometimes when it's a pot luck party. That's a different story. We decide who will make the salad and who will bring the cake, etc. But this is clearly communicated before hand.

Loco polaco - you gave me a link to a Lawyer in London, England. He is not even a member of CSIC and does not have the latest information, as Immigration Lawyers and Consultants have in Canada.

Lawyers and Consultats in Canada belong to CISC, an organization which gives permission to practice Canadian immigration law.

Non members cannot represent clients in immigration matters as they are not updated on immigration law, especially if they are overseas.

The organization requires on-going training and seminar attendance to keep up with law changes. Overseas lawyers cannot keep up as they are not in Canada.

The general public has not been notified that the point system is gone. If you filed your point system papers by Feb. 08 and had an arranged job offer, they will look at your application. If you filed with no job offer or filed after February/08, your applcation is never going to be looked at. Your fee may be gone too.

If you had no job offer, you are advised to remove the application and wait until a list of jobs comes out in November. Persons who qualify to perform the jobs on the list may apply under the point system that year.

The point system is actually called the SKILLED WORKER point system. It requires 67 points. Therefore it is untrue that skilled workers need less points. They are the only group which can apply under this program. :-)

That depends what job. You can apply after 9 months if you live in BC and your job is in the hospitality, restaurant or trucking industry.

The other issue is bacteria and viruses.

If people have to pay extra for washing their hands, some won't.

Their hands will come in contact with other people and items, and will spread viruses and bacteria which comes from feces.

Washing hands should be free.

The point system has not been officially removed. However people are waiting for 3-4 years for their applications to be reviewed.The reason is that no one is looking at them unless they have an AEO (arranged job offer). Therefore the point system exists for them. I mentioned that above.

Don't panic yet.

I think it depends. I am an immigration consultant. Many of my Polish clients entered Canada this year, using their old passports. They arrived at the Vancouver International Airport.

Maybe Toronto is different. Who knows why they do not apply this law everywhere when they are supposed to.
