UK, Ireland / The best place to live on my own in the UK? [57]

The squirrels live out of the town. They also manage to keep their population up despite their being forced out by the greys over much of the rest of the British Isles, so I'd assume homosexuality amongst squirrels is probably relatively low in the Brighton area.

Luton

Luton has the Dunstable Downs nearby, and the Lea Valley, but this isn't the most lovely, interesting, exciting countryside.

Brighton

Particularly good if you prefer your oaks to be Quercus petraea than Quercus robur, if you like red squirrels instead of grey (I believe there are still reds in the area). It is also good if you like to be by the sea or if your favourite rock type is chalk. It is also good if you're gay.

Travel / Petrified of traveling to Poland by myself [9]

I have never found any problem traveling in Poland

I've taken a coach back from Poland. Actually, this was about four coaches. I somehow managed to change coach correctly each time, despite having been given almost no information. Being aware of what is going on around you is probably the most important thing.

History / Polish Jews - they changed their Jewish surnames to Polish [532]

Maybe someone will not like my "philosophy" but as far as I know, these kinds of forums and discussions serve for an exchange of thoughts

I agree.
It's better to be aware of other people's opinions, whever they are the same as your own or opposite.
What is freedom of thought without freedom of expression?
How can you know your opposition if all you do is ignore them.

I am only as guilty of flippancy here as certain other people are of adding nothing to the argument other than words of hate.

edit: I just added the word other to the last sentence to keep it grammatically correct.

whose ever heard of a Jewish carpenter?

I know a Jewish landscape gardener. I used to know a Jewish sales rep too.
No carpenters, but then I do my own carpentry.
Here's that URL one more time:

I thought that Newcastle was a boring town

It has a great nightlife - the pubs vary from moden, smart, even trendy places to quite old places where people play live folk music (not badly like in many places - these people believe in it - see Cumberland Arms). There are of course the noisy places (see Big Market). There is a jazz club that I highly recommend.

The shopping is good if you like that sort of thing. Indoor markets, all the big shops, small independent shops. Check out Central Arcade. Never miss out on a Sunday trip to Tynemouth with its market in the station.

The Metro makes travel around the place easy. The Baltic centre exhibits all kinds of amazing artwork. I've forgotten the name, but there's a much smaller gallery well worth a visit. The architecture is great - the prototype of Syndey harbour bridge, some of the modern buildings, churches (especially All-Saints). The two universities ensure an interesting mix of people. I like the Geordies. Not all of them but...

edit: I didn't even mention it is the home of Viz.

Life / How much do you HATE POLISH PEOPLE and POLAND [1260]

My flatmate doesn't really know why he came here.
At first he was only going to stay for a few months.
After a short trip back home, he took up a full-time job.
Now he says he wants to stay here for the rest of his life.
Aaaargh!

I'll have to start charging him more money for the rent.

Northumberland

I can thoroughly recommend Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
I never saw much of the local countryside, but as someone here said, if you drive,
there are some really wild parts of Northumberland well worth a visit, and some lovely coastlines.

Northern England has more big cities and more of the rugged type of countryside.
Close to London, there is also nice countryside, albiet of a gentler nature.

Aberystwyth is a nice Welsh town

But boring. It is neither north nor south.

Language / Thingummyjig... Whatsisname... [4]

There is no such word

So could I get away with using any random word?
I don't get to use the word 'Bakłażan' enough, and if I want someone to pass me the brush and I momentarily forget 'miotła'...

You are speaking Polish.
Perhaps you are Polish.
Perhaps you are fluent.

... But you just can't think of a particular word or name.

Suddenly your mind goes blank.
It happens to us all sometimes.

What word (like the English 'thingammybob) do you use?

News / Predictions for Polish Presidential Candidates 2010 [23]

Blair? Merkel? Stockwell (TESCO).

FILM & ENTERTAINMENT: STEVE

Is there only one Steve in film and entertainment? I thought there were at least three.

Should I have just yawned again instead?

History / Polish Jews - they changed their Jewish surnames to Polish [532]

I have nothing against the Jews, but neither did Jesus Christ, yet still they crucified Him.

Without the crucifixion, there would be no Christianity.
Someone had to do it. It was not all Jews. It was not the Romans either, as such.
It was humanity.

So try having some humanity.

When Jews were poor and repressed, they were despised for being poor and repressed.
When many Jews are rich and successful, they are despised for being rich and successful.
That says a lot about those who hate.
Do you feel bad about your own lot in life?
Hey - lets blame someone else! Who's first?

Food / Blueberry Pierogi's [30]

This had to be started after the last of this year's crop of home grown Blueberries has been finished.
I am considering buying a second bush to balance out my garden plan.
Nothing to do with eating, of course.

don't freeze the dough

Unless you buy some sort of frozen dough, why freeze it?

Life / Biedronka - retail chain in Poland [48]

Biedronka was one of the first Polish words

One of the first I learnt from someone at work, but without knowing about the retail chain.
Pretty soon, I needed reminding what the word was, so I asked someone else and I got a different answer.
By the way, we were looking at real ladybirds (without smiley faces).

Life / Biedronka - retail chain in Poland [48]

bread, milk, alcohol, when they came from the same producer

For some of these products, the price variation is all accounted for by the retailer's markup.
It would be preferrable for dairy farmers received a decent amount of money for the milk they produce, for example.

Why pay more? Shop in the company of happier, friendlier, better-looking, better-dressed people.

Life / Biedronka - retail chain in Poland [48]

Too many people want to pay as little as possible and to hell with the consequences.
That's without mentioning the fact that there are people who can't afford to pay more.
I can afford to buy good quality food for more money without having to resort to cheap and cheerful (or cheap and miserable) shops of this kind.

In the UK, we have Lidl, which I believe, works on a similar (un)principle.

Life / Biedronka - retail chain in Poland [48]

way they trate people working for them

Do their employees always look unhappy? This happens in some retail chains.
In some shops, you go through the door and suddenly everyone looks ugly, with hairstyles 20 years out of date.
Never look at your reflection in any of these shops.

quality of products they have

Someone once said something about buying condoms from there as a way of living life on the edge!

Life / Queuing and Polish people [49]

Driving onto one road, I don't know where, I thought we had driven into a high-speed florist's shop.
