Language / Do Polish Movies Help learn the language? [60]

Huh? With dubbing you only hear one soundtrack. It's not the original but it's one. It's the dreaded lektor that gives you two unintelligible soundtracks at the same time.

Sorry I guess I'm confused!

The topic is wandering.

True, Sorry.

Language / Do Polish Movies Help learn the language? [60]

But be careful. I hardly see an English language movie with Polish subtitles where there aren't serious problems of translation.
Basically, what I've read elsewhere is that the people in charge don't care about quality and consistently go for low bidders who work fast, rather than people who know what they're doing.
Polish to English subtitles also have problems, not in content so much as style. There's a tendency toward stilted, unnatural or dated usage.

Well interesting you should say that... My girlfriend is a English teacher and is qualified in translation and she told me just the other day that when you translate something especially for movies it is shortened and made simple, I am not very good at Polish but I can understand a little bit and sometimes I think the translations are crappy!

Obviously I still have a long way to go remembering everything I learn.

This is the problem I have, after spending 2 months in Poland I've heard lots and lots of Polish but it never seems to sink in! When I learn I have to write and read back to myself then it seems to sink in....the problem is this may take one hell of a long time!!!

Language / Do Polish Movies Help learn the language? [60]

Do you think by watching Polish movies it will help you learn the language more?

I think yes, I am downloading Polish movies or English ones with Polish subtitles I really find it helpful for picking up some verbs and picking up on word order.

Plus it's alot more fun than reading or using a computer programs.

Language / Usage of the word "Na" [17]

Halo all,

I'm back and had a wonderful time and have had a great Christmas :) I will be making a nice little report on my trip to Poland shortly after the new year is up :P

In the mean time I was wondering about the word "Na" it seems to have an interesting use in the Polish language, could anyone elaborate on how and where "Na" is used as it seems to be like "Po" in the way that it has so many meanings:

polsko-angielski

na (Ectaco-Poland)
prep,
1 an
2 on
3 to
4 for
5 by
6 of
7 onto
8 atop
9 against
10 into
11 upon
12 at
13 in

I know I have to learn to think in Polish to get these words as was written to me in my "Po" post but I just thought it would be nice to discuss as usually you guys seem to have some interesting input towards my learning of this crazy/wonderful language.

:D

p.s. oh and how is everyone by the way?

Food / Food On A Budget [11]

What would someone expect to eat for a 20zl budget? modest sandwiches, well cooked meals, etc etc?

Well it's difficult because you have to multiply that by say 7 and then go to the supermarket and spend the money but for that you can have noodles, sausages, rice, chicken, crisps, vegetables, ect ect the list goes on.

I think even 20zl is alot the more I think about it.

In answer to your question I think cold breakfast a small hot lunch and then a cooked dinner is possible for this budget.

All this is dependant on yourself of course!

Food / CLEAR RED BARSZCZ OUT OF A CARTON? [10]

It's ok. I thought it would be horrible compared to home made but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Not taking anything away from the home made stuff which is best of course.

clear type soup with pierogies?

My grandmother used to make a sour clear type soup and serve it with pierogies. Does anyone have the name of this soup and the recipe? I guess it's called "barsz".

Love / Why are Polish girls so emotional [16]

emotional

I wouldn't say they were emotional. Personally.
I think Polish women are stronger emotionally than English women for sure.

IMO

Food / Polish Milk, Just not the same [54]

Yep, It's true that the milk is just not as good as the UK I was shocked when my friend asked me if I wanted to buy some to try in the supermarket and she took it from an unrefrigerated shelf. I was like :O why is it not in the fridge? She wasn't sure of an answer. Apart from that everything food and drink wise is better.

This film is above your intellectual boundary. Arrrrgh!

Who are you talking to? You quoted me but you can't seriously be suggesting that you are more intelligent than me?
