News / What did Poland get out of the wars and struggles for others? [1108]

I love how you are now complaining that Britain declared war on Germany. Obviously in your eyes Britain shouldn't have done that. I'm inclined to agree.

They could have started by telling the truth? Orders were given to go to Poland and stall them, bs them into thinking were coming. This seems to have set how the forth largest ally in WW2 would be treated.

Poland didn't have much of a choice.

Poland's main concern was that Poland would be free at wars end. Britain assued Poland of this. Poland had no choice but to believe them here also. Ally's till the end.

I'm not coming back to this thread in a hurry.

Great now we upset the donkey.

Is guilt can arise from doing something that is still too little, what about countries that did nothing or were the actual aggressors?

The difference is that both Britain and France had meet and bs'ed Poland as they never intended to help. They said they would help and did not. I do not feel they should have gotten there by the next week, but to lie and con't to stall Poland's thoughts of an alliance was wrong. Within a few weeks where where they?

Germany Invades Poland-France and England Declare War

Britain did not declare war on Germany following Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939?
Yes they did, I believe on the 3rd of Sept. then as Polish fought and keep waiting, France and Britain both "no showed".

Carol, you think that all the blame falls on Britain

No way, far from it, this was a muti national screw over. It's not like France was dancing a jig to come help. As for Russia, shoot, in the east we already knew his plan for Poland. Why do you think Polish refused to fight along side his military. They were just killing us off. This was why we headed to meet British.

Yes, let's do that. Let's study the story

It needs to be aired out so we can be best friends, Harry. :)

all Britain did was declare war on Germany when Germany refused to pull out of Poland and then Britain fought a six-year long war,

Harry just answer one question, What did Poland get out of the wars and struggles for others?

WHAT exactly do you expect the British to do!

Ground troops in large numbers to help defend Poland, within Poland. Even thought this never happened what about not going alone with "Stalin's" orders to not help in the Warsaw rising, demanding Poland had her freedom at wars end. Even the US dropped one shipment over Polish.

As do I and this I feel is why conversations become so heated over this. Just like all the other touchie subjects this one is just as impostant as "Katyn", "Soviet occupation" and so on. If we are going to study history lets study the full story, not pick and choose as Polish were forced to do under occupation.

Just my views

Poland is now free to speak out and I fear the truth is what makes the sparks fly. It won't be easy but within the next five years the full truth shall be common knowledge. Ignorance to Poland's history under both occupations must be shown and the truth studied.

As soon as I saw the subject I felt this is a good thing for Poland.

Spot the deliberate mistake.

No, it was the fact that Poland had a constitution that both Hitler and Stalin's groupies couldn't stand. Poland was alot like the USA where people had a voice and could live side by side in peace. Smack in the middle of two dictators that wanted full control over the people.

You see how could they continue with Poland's people going forward with rights.

I'd love to be able to tell such a joke but the subject isnt exactly a rich seam for comedy. Theres not alot to work with really.

The jokes about the Polish are our reality and really there is nothing funny about this for us. If you want to make this type of "British humor" might I give a bit of advice. Do it in English forum, not Polish. I am sure they would be better able to enjoy it.

Funny how Poles can be so correct and fussy about things like being properly invited but are so happy to tell offensive lies about people when it suits them.

Why do you take the posts and instead of learning how Polish percieved the invite of "Moscow Poles" as a non invite you try to cover for mistakes in the past? To add insult to injury, you call this an "offensive lie". If you still cannot understand that in Poland the Polish military were now dealing with "Soviet occupation" vs. "Nazi" you never will.

Coming soon to a theater near you:

That was the movie they were showing when I learned about July 20th. Tom C. was talking about how erie it was and how the whole crew were feeling the effects.

Thanks, Carol

Now is enough Harry...be a gentleman!

there are a huge number of things that you never heard of in your history classes

your point? Wow, did you just have a full post without using "lier"?

Well...try to look at the Germans not always through the lenses of WWII...

I try to keep an open mind and I will be the first to admit the majority of time has been spent on the eastern side of Poland during 1900-present time span.

I have come to the defence of German's and have blasted them. All in all I am here to learn.

Try to post your own opinons instead of posting so much opinions from others..

I was looking back to who started the notion of "the divine mission of the German nation." I was not aware the date went back that far.

I just saw the July 20,1944 memorial for the first time on TV and what happened to the ones that tried to assassinate Hitler. On the news they were portrayed as hero's today. I never even heard of them in history class.

as it wasn't GB or France so much where Hitler had laid his eyes on...

And this was what "Stalin" was banking on.

Stalin believed that Germany would not invade the Soviet Union until Britain and France had been conquered.

Stalin's response to France's defeat was to send Vyacheslav Molotov to Berlin for more discussions. Molotov was instructed to draw out these talks for as long as possible. Stalin knew that if Adolf Hitler did not attack the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941, he would have to wait until 1942. No one, not even someone as rash as Hitler, would invade the Soviet Union in the winter, he argued.

Stalin surely knowing a distracted Poland would be easy prey...

As well as Germany.

When the Second World War broke out, it was Stalin's plan to claim neutrality. His idea was that if all the countries of the world went to war with Germany, by the end of the war, each would become financially and politically exhausted. Russia, having been at peace the entire time, would inevitably rise as the greatest power in the world and dominate above capitalism. However, even Stalin could not ignore Hitler's advances into the USSR and other parts of Europe - the Nazi plan of domination intimidated and threatened that of Stalin's. It was then that Russia became involved in the war.

In November 1943 at the Teheran Conference, Stalin announced his ideas for postwar Germany. Following the war, Stalin wanted to occupy, demilitarize, and dismember Germany, abolish its officer corps, and force the payment of reparations. Throughout the late 1940s, Stalin believed that Germany would recover and generate yet another world war.

I would not hope for much from him.

It is rather sad, I would hope after all this time others could at the least reccognize the price paid by Poland's people. What the Polish people did for others, and the strength of our people. Look how sensitive people can be when it comes to the "Holocaust" and yet feel it's acceptable to make jokes about the forgotten Polish. Tonight is, "Scream Bloody Murder".

It was still hard but we managed it and as a result we were able to enjoy post war freedom and prosperity. It was pretty sweet, shame you missed it.

Poland was there and helped you retain your freedom. You see unlike others, Poland kept their word.

Do you know how Wikipedia is made and maintained?

yes, I was being lazy today and felt ok

most notably the failure to respond with an overland invasion from the West.

if this is wrong and you sent "overland" to Poland, ???

You march in backwards and tell them you are leaving.

Funny same ones who beat Russia (good chance all of Europe was saved) are now attacked by both "Soviet's" and "Nazi's" , betrayed by the ones that said they would help and we are the joke? I guess if you can make jokes about this then it's open to make fun of "Genocide".

Poles of that time acknowledged this themselves

Poland did admit they could not do this without support. Not to Germany but this was spoken openly when meetings took place.

For its part, the Polish military was under no illusion that it could defend against a German assault for more than a few weeks. Although Poland could field one of the largest armies on the European continent, its troops were only lightly armed in comparison to their German counterparts.

Poland's inability to maintain its borders is an obvious subject for humour, even amongst Poles I bet. If it isnt then it should be.

Do you laugh and joke about Holocaust or just Polish trying to defend borders. I am sure you have viewed the statistics as far as troops & equipment Poland was up against. Sorry but that just cold and not funny at all.

Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, Britain and France declared war on Germany after ultimatums to withdraw expired on September 3. However, some other items of the March 30 guarantee pledge were violated; most notably the failure to respond with an overland invasion from the West.

Those were free Poles.

Free my but. They knew of "Soviet" takeover and were trying to find a way to save Poland.

free Poles were invited to the London victory parade;

Originally the British Government invited representatives of the newly recognised regime in Warsaw to march in the 1946 victory parade in London but the delegation from Poland never arrived - the reason was never adequately explained, pressure from Moscow being the most likely. Bowing to press and public pressure, the British eventually invited representatives of the Polish Air Force under British Command to attend in their place. They in-turn refused to attend in protest at similar invitations not being extended to the Polish Army and Navy. The only Polish representative at the parade was Colonel Jozef Kuropieska - the military attaché of the Communist regime in Warsaw. [21]

Harry what is your definition of "Free"?

Now you agree with us and admit that they were fighting for a free Poland.
Lets see if France and Britain had responded to Poland when they were attacked, would it have also been France and Britain that would be protecting their own? Why did they both declare war on Nazi's, for Poland or themselves?

This has nothing to do with my family it has everything to do with how the Polish continued to live under communist rule.

I just happen to have this in my mailbox from today.

What stuck in my throat, and indeed the throat of my fellow watcher, was the scene in 1943 in which Winston Churchill flew to North Africa to meet General Anders of the Polish home army, who had fought like a lion for the Allies but who now was worried that if he didn't get his troops back to Europe, the Russians might be in a position to take over Poland after the war and turn it into a communist satellite. "Don't worry", Churchill assured the general, affably. "We came into the war because of Poland. We will not abandon you and Poland will be happy."

and

Happy? Well, not exactly. In fact, Poland settled down to several decades of sometimes brutal, always dreary, Russian misrule, after the British did indeed abandon, ie betray, Poland to Stalin. Or, at any rate, did no more than squeak when the brutal German occupation was replaced by an almost-as-brutal Soviet one.

But the film then interviewed aged survivors of the Warsaw uprising who, having endured these appalling acts of Nazi retribution for the uprising, were - months later - beaten, raped or shot dead by the incoming Russians, who wanted to rid their "new Poland" of any likely dissident elements.

as for this take on Britain,

I think you really need to get your thoughts and ideas in order before you carry on with this.

It was a very straight forward question, the article implys that France could have done this alone.

Had France attacked Germany in a serious way as promised, the results could have been very serious, if not disastrous for the Germans.

What I question is what if all three, France, Britain and Poland did all jointly attack , could the world war be avoided? I was asking not to offend but to hear your view.
