USA, Canada / I want to move to Poland from North America, I'm 19. Please read. [8]

Hello Moderation,
And welcome to the Polish Forum.
Get a passport, lie about having a degree and get a job teaching to start yourself off. Teaching English will pay better than plumbing and if you do not speak Polish will certainly be easier. Do a TEFL course, that useed to be enough but there are other courses that you can do, even some on line. And learn Polish.

And good luck

USA, Canada / DO AMERICANS/CANADIANS TRAVEL TO POLAND???? [57]

For architecture there are nicer places than Poland but it all depends on what you like. For food there are better places than anything in Europe but again it depends on what you like. The weather is not the greatest in the world either. All of these things depend on what you are used to and what you like.

,Ha ha ha ha, remember though that the Brits on here defend their country to the hilt and do gang up on people who have any negative criticisms about it. Or maybe they feel that they are constantly being attacked?

Anyone reading this thread can see that taste is an opinion and opinions are like bums, everyone has one.
Americans have always traveled here, when I first came here 6 years ago, the tourist were mainly Polish Americans. Americans do not travel much anyway, something like 80% do not have passports, so any Americans you meet you should give them a break for being different.

Work / Moving to Krakow to teach English, need more tips on life in Krakow [27]

Is it possible to be employed as an English teacher in Poland without speaking any Polish?

Yes

How would you communicate with the children in order to explain things

By using your body, sounds, pictures and they will pick up English.

with your colleagues in the staff room

It is probably an English school so they will speak english.

how would you understand any forms you had to fill in

You don't but that is half the fun.

Relax HelenaWojtczak,
Take a deep breath, in through the nose and out through the mouth, I read your questions as if you were panicking.
I think it depends on what type of character you are as to how easy life can be, I find it easy enough although I never get embarrassed and am not afraid of making a complete spectical of myself, thanks to my parents continuously embarrassing me.

(So, just basically use your *common sense*)

I would have to say NO, common sense is a complete waste of time, I mean where is the fun in it, eh?

Is it safe to take a train in Poland?
be not afraid, be not very afraid....wait a sec, this reminds me of that other thread URL that was one of my favorite threads.

Work / Moving to Krakow to teach English, need more tips on life in Krakow [27]

Oh, yeah, just in case you don't know.
It usually gets to about minus 15 during winter but it is great full of snow and it looks like another country. Just hop on a bus (cost about 3 euro) go one and a half hour south to Zakopane and go skiing/snow boarding, it rocks!!!

these days it is about 30 degrees, there are sand beaches at the lakes close by, the list is endless.
You chose well, actually what did make you choose here?

Well, I think it is safer than most cities in Europe, you'll be grand.
I always think it depends on the person, basically if you want trouble, I am sure you can find it, ha ha ha although it is not recommended.

I know it is nerve wrecking moving to a new country I have lived in 7 myself.
Have you been here before?

This is a city and you should keep your eyes open, as in any city but it is very safe.
The only time I would recommend extra caution would be after a football match, the lads sometimes like to play rough. But again you will see then/hear them a mile off and they are more interested in the apposing team.

No problem, it is easy for me just to type these few sentences.
You will really enjoy it here, it is a wonderful place, I love it here, I live a bit south in the mountains.

note that a lot of the views on this forum are not the views of any of the Polish people I have met and should be taken with a pinch of salt, that of course is my opinion.

Realistically, what's a decent wage to get by on?

That is tricky, as I am sure you understand, it all depends on where you live and what you're used to. For teaching it should be about 4000 Zloty a month but that was before, 4000 is probably still good for a teaching job. There are several threads about this, check'em out.

Where are you from Pubben?

So in Euros, the normal price of beer is about 1:50 euro in a pub, smokes, depends on what you smoke put they are cheap, I gave up a few months ago but they are less than 2 euro, I think. For rent you'll need one month's deposit and one month up front, same as everywhere.

Hello pubben,
And welcome to the Polish forum.
I am in Krakow and I used to be an English teacher here about 6 years ago.
I can advise you to get your flat sorted out before September as Krakow is a student city and they will get all the best flats by then, you could try getting your employers to sort that out for you.

I am sure you will have a fine time here.

Genealogy / Brajcki anyone? [7]

Because I want to visit Poland, but I don't want my head chopped off?

I am quite sure your head will remain firmly on you shoulders when you come to Poland.
The Poland your family are thinking of sounds like it from hundreds of years ago.
And we are all confused.

Everyone goes on about Prauge but the main thing I noticed change over the years (I have been visiting for quite some years) is the titty bars that opened and the crapy shops that replaced the nice ones, they just changed to cater for a certain class of people

I have never been to Prauge but you raise an interesting point, I lived in Vilnius, Lithuania. It has very similar (if not the same) architectural beautiful buildings as Krakow. I assume from the time of the Polish Lithuanian Union, when Krakow was probably the capital of Poland and they shared many things even Architects.

That having been said, Vilnius has tity bars and nightclubs in preciously beautiful buildings, it is an utter disgrace. I walked around the centre of the old town looking for a pint of milk and some bread and I founf 3 strip clubs and 2 casinos in half an hour, never did get my milk or bread.

I am happy when some people ask me in Krakow where to go (they mean tity bars) I actually have no idea.

2nd polish fastfood I miss, obwarzanki:

Yeah they are great for on the way to work. What is the fastfood you miss the most?

Dublin/Krakow's problems were linked with drunk Brits, pppfffff.

Naw not like that, just there were some noises being made by a small minority of tourists, mainly stag dos, I could not say they are even close to being anywhere near the real problems in Dublin/Krakow.

Whats your problem you ignorant prick

That was a quick change, relax.

well i'm sure sooner or later we will have somebody write that the reason Krakow is going down hill is due to the British :):):):) Sometimes the Poles love to blame everybody else apart from themselves :)

Yeah, Krakow is going up!. It just needs to sort out a few things. In Dublin we had the same problem with stag dos.
Or should I just let everyone beat up the Brits, hhhmmm possibly lay in a boot or two myself, lol

Their food

There is a massive amount of Polish food here, in fact it is difficult to get anything else. Street food, beer food and a couple of French or Itilian places, being the exception.

way they live

Emm, Yeah, ok.

how they relate to visitors

Well just do not expect everyone to speak English. I remember meeting some Brits who thought the bartendress was impolite because she did not speak English, she was my friend. I am sure you will be fine.

the architecture

Simply wonderful, I recommend looking at a map of the centre of Krakow now and you will see the medieval layout, castle on top of hill, the green going around the market square used to be a mote. The architecture is simply divine, you will love it.

their history

Krakow is covered in History.

Shall I draw a Picture

Yes that would be wonderful and then you could post it on here, but I think you were being a smart arse and nobody likes a smart arse.

can anyone give me some tips on what to do and see

Hello Frank,
There are very many things to do in Krakow, it all depends on what interests you. I would recommend visiting Aushcwitz on the last day of your trip, it is depressing and will probably depress the hell out of you.

There are some good English people, I think I met one the summer of 91' but he was originally from Scotland, ha ha ha.
There is plenty of information on here that should aid you on your search, it is annoying to go somewhere, in fear of people judging you because of some Louts but I am sure you will have a wonderful time.

Life / Money - a taboo subject in Poland [25]

They immediately enquired how much I was earning

Yes, it is a normal thing to do. I think it is to check your status, are you below or above them but I do not know for certain.

It is annoying as well that a secretary 'make tea and type', you should have called yourself a P.A. or whatever the funny title people use these days.

Actually, just a thought, There is a massive thing in Lithuania about position, if you are a director of a company, you are up there with God herself.

And all you have to do is have 3000 euro in the bank for half an hour.

Just on the topic of how different cultures have different emphases on different things, I have met quite a few people that did not know their age, in Nepal and Africa. It struck me because we Europeans and Americans put so much emphases on age. So now I do not really care about aging, I just think of the people whom I have met, that could not care less and why would they.

Freedom of speech, and all that shite.

Ha ha ha ha, that made me laugh

Genealogy / Brajcki anyone? [7]

Hello Keturah Brajcki,
And welcome to the Polish forum.
I remember being 13, I am now 30. When I was 13 and 14 it was the most difficult time in my life, I hope this is not the same for you.

I am Irish and live in Poland, near Krakow. I can not help you finding your ancestry and think t is important for you to find out, you do not know where you are going until you know where you've been. I think you would be perfectly safe coming here. Poland has changed very much.

But there are plenty of thread on here that may help you.
Best of luck
