Feedback / Poster's gender not included - bad for translations. [15]

it would be better if those links (edit, reply, quote) remained somewhere within the post's area, not running loose between posts

Admin changed this just after I commented on how I approved of both 'quote' and 'reply' being in the posters' boxes. He does it on prurpse you know.

Sorry!

Food / No Curry in Tri-city area...damnit. [8]

Heat the oil in a pan. Add cloves, fennel seed and cumin seed. After a few minutes, add a chopped onion, chopped chilli and crushed garlic. You can either seal the meat in a seperate pan or add it when the onion is soft. Chuck in a tin of plum tomatoes, chopped coriander, salt and a little chillii powder if you like it hot. Break up the tomato with a spoon (must be wooden or you'll die). Leave it cooking on the stove with a lid on until you're bored of waiting.

The names of these spices can be found on this page. You should be able to get all the ingredients in Poland with no problem at all. The only thing you might still miss would be the Indian music in the background and that wallpaper every Indian restaurant in the UK has.

UK, Ireland / Best county in UK and why ? [45]

You can understand the natives when they speak English

The people of Clackmannanshire say almost the same thing.

Sea port

Is that the good one or the bad one?

11. It's not far from the Isle of Wight.

Language / "polish pig" - is it offensive? [41]

Of all the common farm animals, the pig is without doubt the most intelligent, with only one exception...

Life / "Wrong" Polish music [13]

I wonder if TomekCatkins ever worked out any Disco Polo on the guitar.
I don't want to have to arrange any of this stuff for the banjo.

History / What was poland like in the late 60's [10]

A chap I work with (much older than myself) started work as an apprentice working with a Polish bloke who had settled in England after the war. He was a lorry fitter, and made journeys to Poland with his van that he had doctored so he could sneak clothes and stuff over the border to his family. At least that's the story anyway.

I have heard just a little bit of the music that is generally labelled as 'Polish Jazz'. Some of it is jazz, but a group called Novi Singers from the late '60s, through the '70s, sound like quite an interesting bunch, fusing various different styles - including bossa nova. (I've been looking for some Polish bossa nova for some time - I've just been hoping that some actually exists!) This goes against the commonly held belief that nothing culturally crossed th iron curtain. I'd be interested to find a few more interesting things in Polish music from those times. I imagine they weren't the only people doing something quite forward-looking.

But on the other hand, a Czech girl I used to know told me that her father only became a hippy in recent times because he wasn't allowed to back in the day. Whether that was because there weren't any back then or if it was just to do with the pressure to conform, I don't know. I do know that not all countries... over there... did things the same way.

That's enough from me - it's not as if I actually KNOW anything about it!

Language / (part 2) Polish Language Pronunciation - Sample Words and Phrases [311]

It's unvoiced (like an F) if it is followed by another unvoiced consonant, ie.
C, Ć, CZ, K, P, S, Ś, SZ, T.

That is why names ending in -owski are pronounced as if it is -ofski.

Or so says the donkey who risks trying to teach his grandmother to suck eggs.

which is more ferocious, a Maori who feels violated or a Govan woman in a rage

Which one has more tattoos? Which one does a tribal dance and chanting before the attack?

Life / Warsaw - most boring capital in Europe, after Brussels - comments? [78]

I mentioned it already, but surely Bratislava has got to be worse.

Actually, I just looked it up on this internet thing (hey, has anyone tried this internet thing? There's loads of stuff on it. You could spend your whole life there if you weren't careful!) and bits of it look quite nice.

Life / Are there many atheists and agnostics in Poland? [47]

Most atheists still carry the baggage of the religion of the cultural background or that they were brought up with.
Some lapsed Catholics still call themselves Catholics whereas others claim to be atheists when the term lapsed-Catholic applies just as well.

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Simple curiosity, nothing else.

You speak for all Polish girls?

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Calling all people of any one nationality racist - surely that is a racist act itself.

I'm bored of this post already, so I'll add something to it.
A nation is not a race. A colour is not a race. There is no such thing as race. But many people think there is. If someone does think there is such a thing as race, fair enough, but if they then use that as a way of distinguishing the value of human lives, there is something wrong with them.

So if you demean a whole group of people for what you perceive as racism, you have just grouped together a whole load of people whom someone else might consider to be a race.

There's too much racism in a world in which there is no such thing as race.

Genealogy / the name jowita...does it mean anying...? [95]

One a at the end is enough.

But some feminine words (I don't know about names) end with consonants.
Okay, so it's bizarre enough as it is. Nice name though. It sounds better as a girl's name.

Genealogy / the name jowita...does it mean anying...? [95]

There is a much stronger tendency in English for names to change from being male names to female names. I could give examples, but I'd rather ask about the same thing happening with Polish names. Anyone heard of a boy named Sue?

Life / Smingus-Dyngus - Polish tradition [155]

I'll have to go to B&Q to buy a bucket on Easter Monday. There's a rather nice looking Polish girl working there.

Before noon, you all say?

Life / What do Polish people think about Turkey? [52]

I keep seeing stuff about Turkish men and skype.
Has anyone asked the question 'Does Skype mean something dodgy in the Turkish language that encourages all the dodgy people to do dodgy things?'

Or did I mean there are no donkeys...

Nie ma osła

I'd like to say that would have been my third choice, but...

I'd still like to see something like this that utilises a bit of grammar.

Food / Help with baking ingrediants. [18]

It is another name for Potassium Hydrogen Tartrate. I haven't seen the stuff in years. I think some baking powder (Sodium Bicarbonate) contains cream of tartar.

It has nothing to do with Tartare sauce.

I dunno. Have a look around a few shops! Can't help you any more.

UK, Ireland / Queue to leave broken Britain [59]

qualifications in the plumbing industry

How do I temporarily turn my hot water off so I can fit a tap to some of the pipework? There seems to be nowhere to turn it off between the kitchen sink and the boiler (which is a nice, shiny, white combi boiler, seeing as you ask).

It was fitted by a man who is now living in Australia. I wouldn't go to Australia - all those dangerous animals out there worry me a bit, especially those koalas - I bet they're a bit dangerous when they're cross.

Britain can't be as broken as my kitchen. But by the end of this long weekend, my kitchen will be better than Britain has ever been or ever will be.

I wanted to say 'There is no donkey' - what I put was my second guess. I can't remember what my first guess was, but I seem to recall there was another word in there.

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

Many 'Brits' are 50% and 25% Polish blood from the influx of polaks after WW2

Many is a strong word. But with the way these things work, it is reckoned that about 25% of the English population (whoever they are) have some Hugenot blood, despite the small number of Hugenots that came here. We're more Irish than we used to be too. I pulled a couple of trees out for a customer the other day who had a Polish name. When I gave him the trees, I checked I was giving them to the right bloke and he pronounced his name all Englishy. Not a recent arrival, probably second generation.

it was staged and the people were hand picked

These are not just any old idiots, these are hand-picked, guaranteed stupid old idiots.
