History / WW2 Arm bands. [11]

Hello,
A lot of the people on this forum are very interested in World War two.
So I thought you would all find these arm bands interesting.
They were being sold in an antique shop here in Poland.
I asked what they meant but I am not proficient enough in Polish to understand the answer.
Can someone translate them, please?.

There seems to be quite a few different ones.
I only know about the star of David, that the Jews got, the one that is in all the films.

It is scary to think people were branded like this.

Life / Are Polish People Hypochondriacs? [50]

I think it's ridiculous that a doctor prescribes antibiotics to a patient who has only been sick for 1 day (common cold/flu).

I tell you, I got an awful shock about two years ago in Dublin, I got a bad dose of the flu, worst I've ever had, I charged 100 Euro for antibiotics, Scandalis!.

The doctors are in bed with the pharmaceutical manufacturers, at least here they give you cheaper alternatives, I think that's by law?.

Are Polish People Hypochondriacs?

Yes, a nation of hypochondriacs.
Watch the advertisments on TV, they are always trying to sell you medicine.
There are more Aptekas (Chemists, pharmacists) here than any other country i have seen. One per person or something?.
And in the markets they will have a big stack of those pump things used to check blood pressure and a pile of thermometers beside them.

When i ask Polish people they wonder what I am talking about.
:)

The chaps I work with seem to find it impossible to allow themselves time off to be sick.

I have not seen anyone take work off because of it.

Life / The Polish Moustache [35]

I have to take a photo of what i am talking about.
I took a load of photos last night in Krakow but I still have not got the hang of my camera yet.
They all came out grainy.

Life / The Polish Moustache [35]

Maluchs with moustaches, LOL.

Seriously, I see them all the time, yeah sure there is a man behind that thing somewhere but like one of those long haired dogs, i don't know how they see through them.

Life / Taxpayers subsidise priest's Alfa Romeo in Bielsko Biała [29]

I think i may have inadvertently started the use of the word on here. If so I apologise profusely.

So it is you who have corrupted the fragile pure minds of the Polish forums and Athens?.
And you admit it openly!
The evidence before the court is
Incontrivertable, there's no need for the jury to retire.
Your sentenced to death by drinking hemlock or a pint of Guinness, whichever you prefer.

Whilst a woman who goes into a relationship with a married man is bad enough,

Or perhaps very cunning because if the priest devorces God, he gets half of everything.
Now i am just being silly.

The forbidden fruit comment was meant more as a religious pun.

Why is it women are not allowed to be priest again? Nun's sure but why aren't women allowed to say mass?

Religions need people to come to these churches regularly so the message can be enforced and reinforced.

"religion is 99% ceremony and 1% faith"

I also thought it was strange that "God" does not have a physical form and does not need such a large house (church) with ornate gold sculptings, while homeless people sleep out in the cold streets.

I should let it be made clear that I am an Atheist, thank God :)

Jesus hung around with thieves, murders and prostitutes, he was not a member of any religion and he gave all his stuff away.
Now look at the church, which is supposed to represent him.

I think even religious people are becoming critical of the church.
The church no longer have the power they used, thank God :)

I think your point about the priest is not so much, that he is living the life of Reily
but that he is doing it without contributing to the tax authorises which pay for the roads that his car drives on.
Because he is a religious man and for some incredibly strange reason religions are not taxable and therefore a great money spinner?
Would i be right in my account of what you mean by this thread?

Such a hard life, but it's just accepted and in all honesty I don't have a problem, they give up (in most cases) a lot, the right to have a family, children etc, so if my priest pops in the pub for a swift one, good for him!

I would never deny a priest a drink because he has given up women :)

Although it always bothered me that a priest gives family counciling, even though he has no family of his own, which makes him unqualified for the job I think.

But I don't think that priests have such grand lives, that is why I posted about the Vatican, now they know how to spend a bob or two ;)

History / Walentego Badlaka's well in the market square, Krakow (Katyn) [13]

how about: desctruction of arts and crafts.

I thought Krzysztof's explanation makes much more sence?

the sign was placed there after the commie time not during so it's a bit hard to know exactly what they ment as everything polish was under attack by the darn communists.

Not any longer.
I think some plaques are kind of poetic, to evoke an emotional response rather than a matter of fact statement, no?

After a while the commies decided that even this little of "free market" was too much for a socialist country and started troubling them with legislative and administrative counter-measures.

Very interesting.

I did not understand that before.

I thought it meant craftsmen (the translation given to me earlier this evening) and assumed it meant the destruction of tradition but i was a bit ify on my assumption.

Very interesting indeed.

History / Walentego Badlaka's well in the market square, Krakow (Katyn) [13]

There is a water pump and a plaque in Krakow's market square.
It is dedicated to a man who set himself on fire in protest because he could not live a lie about Katyn.
Here are some photos I took earlier today.

Could someone please translate the plaque, please.

I tried to find a thread I could post these on and although there are a few on Katyn, I did not think they were suitable.

(If you find an appropriate place please just add this to it)

Food / Krakowski Kredens [13]

My fiancee has just introduced me to the products of this company. Specifically, strawberry jam and pickles (ogórki konserwowy). 20PLN for sth that that would otherwise cost 10PLN together.

Is it good? I mean worth it?

Try this:krakowskikredens.pl/index.php

It looks very well.
It's a good idea to properly display and sell some of Poland's finer foods.
Although they need to do the translation, it is not operational yet.
