UK, Ireland / Invisible influx - Brits not easy to mix with Poles? [30]

How do you know these "foreigners" weren't born here? I was, and I speak both English and Polish everywhere, and I don't even have a foreign accent (or bad dress sense, haha) either. When I'm abroad, I speak Italian, Polish, Czech and French, though, lol.

The accent gives it away.

I can tell the difference between a British born asian speaking Punjabi to her Mother and someone whose Punjabi is their mother tongue.

When it comes to living in another country......

UK, Ireland / Invisible influx - Brits not easy to mix with Poles? [30]

Could it be that us Brits are not easy to mix with? I don't know, so please open up the can on this...

I apologise if what I am about to say sounds narrow minded, but I tend to find that because (quite naturally) foreigners speak in their own languages to each other when out and about, it puts up a barrier.

It's almost as though they don't want people to know what they're saying and there seems very little effort to speak in English. I find this also quite hard to understand when they have young children in tow as it gives the impression, possibly wrongly, that they're not intending to teach their children English either.

I may get shot down in flames when I say this, but it might help for foreigners to make the effort to speak English when they're shopping etc. It shows that they're happy to live here and want to make this their home, rather than create an enclave of their homeland.

This isn't just my view either, but many people I know notice this.

UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

However, the OP is looking for advice on where to move in the UK. Arise St George provided an opinion

He is being careful with his words that's all

The nasty remarks start after a few beers I'm sure.

Or maybe moderator doesn't think it's overall racist. That choice of words may be strong but the truth is, there are a lot of "white" areas in the UK. Until recently the area in which I live had no black/Asians/Africans at all.

Well I beg to differ.

Yes there are many "white" areas in the UK, but it doesn't have to be made into a selling point.

"Arise St George" wasn't casually talking about the, shall we say "lack of diversity", in the town he lives in, he was turning it around to make the point that, as he sees it, this is the main reason why crime levels are low. He was making a direct link between race and things like levels of crime.

Many things cause crime, it's not as simple as skin colour.

Stir things up? I merely described my community. Like it or not, it's the community I live in and it is highly suspicious of non whites. Non whites don't settle here. Alot of people that know Kirkham & Wesham will tell you it's not a suitable place for Asians or blacks to LIVE. Even Asians in Preston will tell you. Visit, yes ok but not to live.

It's a perfect community for a white person, but non-whites won't feel welcome. There have been a few blacks that moved here but moved out within months. They come and go.

Not trying to stir things up when you post stuff like that ?

Your choice of words is inflammatory.

Your town may have a great record on crime etc but it is still everything that is wrong with this country, just in the same way that an open door policy on immigration is also. They are just opposite ends of the spectrum, but both deadly and damaging.

A conspiracy theory has been aired before about how such inflammatory posts are tolerated or even encouraged because they are good for web traffic.

Well the moderator is still banging on about some property website or other, so you could be right.

Or maybe it is her night off.

No, a lot of people reading agree with you, its just that this is becoming so frequent.

That's as maybe, but I still find it hard to believe how you all can have a nice fluffy discussion about house prices whilst someone is being so deliberate in their attempts to stir things up.

If it happens as frequent as you imply, szkotja2007, then maybe some of the users should be warned or banned.

There was even a moderator posting and seeming to ignore it.

Then no matter what these guys say in here, this is a great community. I was born here and lived here as a child. I moved back here a year ago and it's still the same. Your kid will not get involved with drugs, guns, knives in this community. It's a respectful community but it's a community that looks at non whites as a threat to the community. Even the kids have respect. I had 2 school kids knocking on my door the other week. I opened the door and they handed me my keys. I had left them in the latch the night before. Anywhere else my keys would have been nicked and so too would my car. I'd recommend you to look into it. You'd be impressed.

Am I the only one reading this that thinks such blatant racism isn't good !

And what did you think of their "whites only" policy ?

Or does that not matter to you as long as it doesn't look like you'll suffer from negative equity ?

Oh how brave of them, they like Scottish people !

What is the local stance on people in wheelchairs and lesbians ? Are they ok ? (As long as they're white of course!)

100% white British and the accents pure Lancastrian I'm sure.

I can't imagine such people tolerating a foreign accent, however white their skin is.

The sooner you b*gger off to New Zealand the better. I hope they are more tolerant of foreigners than you are.

I'm white, British and thank my lucky stars I don't live in your "perfect race" community.

Blacks and Asians are looked at as invaders but you'll have no problem in this small community if you're white.

And not a hint of anything suggesting that the above reference to racism against those who are not white isn't a good thing.

Now I see why you chose your screen name.

Now probably isn't a good time to buy here as things are slowing down with house prices etc.

It depends how big a deposit you have etc and how big a mortgage you need. If you need a big mortgage, I would leave it for at least six months and see if prices drop.

I know this was in the Express and they may have their own agenda etc etc but why don't people such as those in this article admit defeat and go home ?

UK, Ireland / Immigrants in Peterborough [9]

It is ironic that Mrs Patel being a native of the Indian sub-continent should be against further immigration :-)

I agree that it is ironic that they quoted Mrs Patel, who is probably 2nd or at the most 3rd generation British. However, the fact that they did gives a much stronger message than speaking to (yet another) white British person and asking for their views on immigration.

Someone like Mrs Patel speaking on such an issue is similar to her speaking into a microphone, while the rest of us yell at the top of our lungs into the middle of a hurricane......and at best get ignored, or at worst get dismissed as having a racial motive.

However the bloke who wouldn't "work with a load of foreigners" for £7 an hour needs his backside kicking from here to eternity. Lazy, ignorant bar steward !!!

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

The Polish are not hated here in the UK, however, I think "tolerated" could be as good as it gets.

It's nothing personal (although it would feel that way), but in the main we're angry against our Government for the "open door" policy on immigration. It's not the Polish themselves that the English are upset with. We're a small island and just don't have the resources to cope with all the extra people.

UK, Ireland / Advertising for Electricians in Poland to work in the UK [14]

I agree with you Tony, however, I would tend to assume that someone hiring migrant workers is doing so to get cheap labour.

Therefore a firm of electricians who is hiring on the cheap isn't exactly going to be that bothered about their qualifications are they ?

There is good and bad in any industry, however, it's a bit of a kick in the spuds to British electricians who want the work to be passed over in favour of a cheaper foreign alternative.

Powerplus should be offering her jobs to the electricians who already live in Britain first.

Passing a driving test in one country shouldn't automatically give you licence to drive in another.

People should be tested again in the country they wish to drive in.

UK, Ireland / Do Polish immigrants wish to stay in UK - long term? [92]

I'm not Polish so forgive me for throwing my spanner in the works here.

I was also wondering this in terms of how the current economic situation is impacting on peoples' plans.

I have always sort of assumed that the Polish (and other EU migrants) came over to make some quick cash and then go home again. Some maybe staying but the bulk going back having witnessed first hand our crazy cost of living and general overcrowding.

Are people changing their plans now that the economy is taking a bit of a downturn ?

UK, Ireland / "Half of Poles in UK plan to return home" Telegraph article [8]

Interesting article, makes sense too.

The Daily Express seem to think different though.

TAXPAYERS are forking out £21million a year to bankroll child benefit for 27,000 youngsters still living in Poland, it emerged last night.

UK, Ireland / Babies of Polish couples born in England [25]

no, British and Canadian passports are on eof the most seeked in the world still:), so don't feed us with the "pride" argument.

So by that I take it that you mean that the average Polish parent can't wait to ditch their country and have their kids born here and brought up as British citizens with British passports ?

Michal, just wondering, have u ever heard of Alan Bast*rd? The New Statesman, hehehe

For every Michal who posts on a forum like he does here, there are 100s who keep their views to themselves.

That might be more polite, but it doesn't mean that the silent majority aren't about to bust a blood vessel I'm afraid.

On the passport situation, do the Polish want their children to be born here and to have British passport ?

Does having pride in their country mean nothing ?

UK, Ireland / Polish doctors fly over just to work in the UK [15]

This is proof, if proof were needed, that the NHS has scant regard for its patients.

It shouldn't be allowed. It shouldn't be allowed, not because he is from another country, but because there is no way he can be alert enough all the time to make sound decisions.

Typical penny pinching NHS.
