Can someone take a photo of my dads old home in Wrzeszcz ?

It was Labesweg Number 10 now Lelewela number 10, couple homes over from where Gunter Grass grew up..????

I want to get my dad a photo of his old home, he is 80 and not in good health and has not seen it since 1940.....he has never had a photo of his childhood home.

It would mean the world to him.

You could try Google Earth or something similar.

There are pictures on the net of number 13... Gunter's home. I guess your dad would have lived across the street.

He's no where near Wrzeszcz. Spiritus is closer unless he's buggered off somewhere else

Yeah I am sure it's the "Harley rider" part and not the "she" part ;)

But anyway I am glad someone is going to do it and good on the daughter for the idea to make an old man happy.

Ask for a full body frontal picture...I can't count the number of times I have seen a hot blonde on a bike only to see his beard when I passed. (I mean I have a 'friend" who told me that happens a lot)

i'm in wrzeszcz right now - but of course my camera is still at home ...
If this task can wait a couple of weeks (i'm about to go on vacation) then it shouldn't really be a problem for me to walk round there one lunchtime.

Wow

Thanks for all the support. Yes I am a she , and ride a harley ( Hog member as well) and wildrover has seen my photo. I want to get my dad a photo before he passes on. He is not in good health.

I wish I would have found this forum years ago. Yes he lived near Gunter Grass, he and Gunter were childhood friend as they are only 2 years apart.

You are all great people. I look forward to visiting your country.
Thank you

Freshly taken - around 6pm this evening. I never did promise *quality* photography, did I ? :) I'm very much a point'n'shoot type.

I resampled them to 8x6in - to make them easier for me to upload. If you want the full-blown jpgs then e-mail me and we'll work something out.

hope your Dad enjoys them.

You're very welcome - I hope your dad likes them.

Perhaps in time Google's Street View will get to Wrzeszcz - that would be much more fun.

I will make it to Poland, when is the question. If passport doesnt show up soon , it may have to wait until next summer. USA passports are backed up since the laws changes, pain the butt !

I am hoping while my dads is still with us. I would love to call him from his hometown.

I will go to POLAND !!!

Bringing photos to him Saturday. I told him about them and you could hear his smile across the phone. He could not believe this was possible. Through you he can see his home again.

thanks !

And when I get there Wildrover we are gonna ride that harley and find Cjj so we can have a Beer !!! good idea.................

His health problems will not allow him to fly any longer , Dr's orders , or believe me he'd be going.

Does he have memories of other areas ? I don't mind taking more of other places round about Wrzeszcz if you want them (and don't mind a random time lag while I get in gear). I work on ul Matejki which isn't at all far away.

I dont know what your financial situation is...but something to think about is that you can hire nurse or MD escorts who bring equipment and fly in the next seat. It really depends on the case and will surely cost several thousand dollars.

Just an option if possible. Believe me you have done more than most people would..just wanted you to know about this possibility. I cant speak to the quality of these links I just googled "medical escort service"....you could check more of them.

You single handedly make up for the grumpiness and indifference of most of the Polish people. Good job...what a nice person you are :)

He can not fly , he has had to many strokes and has an enlarged heart and needs 2 new knee joints but cant have the surgery , not healthy enough. fly is out and I do not think he could handle a ship. He is just not able.

I took the photos to my dad. He could not believe that the apartment has not changed, he lived on the first floor, the exact photos you took of the lower level was his birth home.

He says thank you so very much. I am going to add them to the photo book I made him and I put them on a slide show DVD so he can sit and watch them on TV. the DVD turned out great. He started talking about everything from his childhood. amazing how well his memory is.

He talks about a few places still in old Langfuhr, his old church, it was called Herz-Jesu Kirche, it was just down a few streets from Lelewela street

Mostly: just outside old Langfuhr:
Bretowe cemetary where is mom ,dad and brothers are buried. He keeps asking if the graves still exsist but my cousin never answers the question. which means they most likely do not. He was not able to come to the funerals ever. dad had a rough life. I try to get him as much as I can from his city, no one should go through life with out photos and memories. so this I provided him.

Anything from those places that you can get photos of would be nice, but you have done so much. I appreciate more then I can ever put into words. He never thought he would see that home again. he misses Danzig so much.

He pulled out the 1 and only photo of my grandmother and put my photo next to to it friday. I look just like his mother. I had to pull strings just to get the photo of his mother from a cousin. Like pulling teeth. so sad. anyway sorry for rambling.

CJJ you should email me. would like to stay in contact with you.

Down the list you can see old photos of
Kościół katolicki Najświętszego Serca Jezusa (Herz-Jesu-Kirche) przy ul. ks. Zator-Przytockiego (Schwarzerweg).

The cemetary - I'd need a recent name for it. However I'm off on vacation now for 2 weeks - totally cut off from technology (I hope) [[ if anyone else can find out what it's called now then I can see what's left. ]]

Every year on All Saint's Day people go out and put candles on family graves - and on any that look dark and lost. So at least once a year someone will spare a moment for any graves that have lost their family to other countries.

and now ... off to see what other crises have developed (my car broke down yesterday :) that's what comes of driving a clunker)

(my car broke down yesterday :) that's what comes of driving a clunker)

Good luck with that. And enjoy your vacation !

I will check out the link you sent and I will try to find the new name of the cemetary.
It was across the street from another "soldiers cemetary" called Siberhammer. ANyone with info on those send it my way please.

Whats sad is that I have located a cousin from Danzig but they speak no english. I have written them in German & Polish ,sent them family photos but you think they could answer a simple question? Nope ! They don't even answer period.

This thread restored my faith in humanity.

I thank God for this Forum

Nah humanity as a whole is still screwed...you just witnesses one of the minority of decent people left doing a good thing. CJJ is a good egg.

I know it doesn't help, but this is not so unusual in the world of Genealogy/Family History.
How old is the cousin ? It might be worth looking for his/her children on facebook/nasza klasa etc. Assuming that they are over eighteen of course.

Have you done a name check at: moikrewni.pl/mapa/
