What would the name Wazil be in English?

I'm doing research on my fathers side of the family and came across the name Wazil and then the trail kind of dies there.. so I'm wondering what the English version of that name might be?? I ran into a simular situation with another family members name being Ludwiga and that turned out to be Louise.. and the trail picked up with that so I'm hoping this time the same will happen.

Thanks so much for your help!

Have a great day!
Niki :)

Makes me think of Wassily Kandinsky and I think the Slavic version is Vasily and I just googled for it and a site called thinkbabynames (but I am not allowed to post a link here, the site tells me), says that equates to Basil.

I think you are right. My Lemko great-grandfather was Wasyl, but people outside the family called him Basil. It's probably the same for Wazil.

Yes, Wasil links to Basil. Other forms: Vasileios, Vasilis, Vaso, Vasos, Vasya, Wassily, Bazyli, Basilio, Basile, Basilius

Thanks everyone!

As soon as I read Basil.. I knew that had to be it.. two generations down they named their son Basil so I'm going to go with that! Hopefully now I'll find something!

Thanks so much!

My granfather's first name was Wasyl, but in the States he was known by William. Different records show Vasyl, Wasyl, Basilius
