it's of Latin origin, from Jupiter (Jovis/Jovisz)
Ha...i knew she was out of this world..... thank you....
That's my name, actually... I've lived in this world for some time already but so far I've not been successful in finding a satisfactory answer to the question of the meaning/origin of my name. Once I came across an article claiming that Jowita was originally a man's name (there was some male saint Jowita). It's generally a rather rare name in Poland, not mentioned in books devoted to origins and meanings of names. BTW, wildrower, why do you want to know?

Jowita
certainly an interesting name, also an interesting fact that originally it was a mans name, so how did you come to have a man's name if you don't mind me asking??? :):)
Well, it USED to be a man's name! Not anymore :) There's a Polish film "Jowita" - from the 60s if I'm not mistaken... And it's named after a female character!

I live in Gdańsk. Thx for complimenting my English - as a fifth year student of so called English Philology I have no other option but to speak the language fairly fluently ;)

lol, well that answers my question then :) no wonder your english is that fluent if you've been learning for five years, however congratulations, i don't think i could learn polish in five years that for sure :)
wow, thats as north as you can get in poland, lol ;)
What do you do from day to day, are you a teacher of english??? or are you studying yourself??

I think this discussion is getting a bit 'off-topickish' :D if you want to know more about me, feel free to pm me ;)
There is a much stronger tendency in English for names to change from being male names to female names. I could give examples, but I'd rather ask about the same thing happening with Polish names. Anyone heard of a boy named Sue?

If it happens to Polish names, they are usually modified by adding some female suffixes, e.g. Marian - Marianna, Ryszard - Ryszarda etc., which makes my name even more bizarre.
One a at the end is enough.
But some feminine words (I don't know about names) end with consonants.
Okay, so it's bizarre enough as it is. Nice name though. It sounds better as a girl's name.

99% of Polish female names end in 'a' - the only exception I know being "Inez" or "Ines" - apparently not deeply rooted in the Polish language, though.
:)
mm-hmm! - Where's that thread of yours?

How can she ring you if she doesn't speak English and you dont speak Polish ?
How do you know she was going to ring you on a social basis if she doesn't speak English and you don't speak Polish ?
You seriously need to communicate a lot better or you will drive your self round the bend you know ;-)
Get a go-between to ask her out on your behalf. The old fashioned way is for the man to ask a lady out so I think it would be a bit forward of her to ring you up just like that ?

Yes, but you only think she did! She may have not or she may have invited you and you missed the date.......why can men not communicate better with their voice rather than spending most of their time and energy thinking about it ? You see , you have in your own mind what you think she is thinking, but she may not be thinking that at all because she isn't you and her thought processes believe it or not are different than yours.
She might have thought you would just come round, see what I mean. No clear communication between the two of you and you get all this anguish.........
