Ułaszyn is a name of patronymic origin derived from, believe or not, the Christian name Błażej (Blaise). Purely Polish patronymics would include Błażejczyk or Błażejowski, so what does that have to do with Ułaszyn?. Remember that the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was once euro per's biggest land empire encompassing-besides the nations mentioned in the name itself-Latvians, Germans, Jews, Ukrainians, Armenians, Moldavians, Tartars, etc., etc. This made for quite a bit of cultural cross-fertilisation. In Ukrainian there were several versions of Błażej, including Własyj and Włas (Polish spelling). In Ukrainian the W (English V sound) often alternates with a semi-consonantised U to produced a mildly English W sound, and this would produce Ułas instead of Włas. From there, Ułaszyn (meaning Blaise's boy) is but a step away. For more information on the Ułaszyns of Poland, where they live, whether anyone else is researching the surname and whether a coat of arms goes with it, plus a slew of genealogical tips on tracking down lost-lost relation, please contact me.

[Moved from]: Meaning of Surname Rucinski

I recently looked up what the last name of Rucinski means, which is my mother's maiden name, and it means: habitational name for someone from a place called Ruciany in Siedlce. Can anyone tell me anything about this area or if it is still referred to by the same name. I also know that my great-grandmother owned land in Siedleczysko, district Iwanisko from 1922 to 1969. If anyone could give me some information about these areas and if they know of any churches in the area that I can contact in order to get records would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for the help,
Sarah :)

The root pf the Ruciński surname is the word rucina, a diminutive of ruta (the herb myrtle). This herb has traditionally had a ritual significance related to marriage and spinsterhood. For more info please contact me.

Hello,

I would like to get in touch with Polonius3 or the Ulaszyn who answered him about the Meaning of Ułaszyn surname.

My grandfather was prof. Henryk Ułaszyn ( my Mothers Father ) and I'm very much interested in this family history, specially in it's origins, coat-of-arms etc. I have extensive family tree, but it needs some adjustments so I would be happy to get in touch with any Ułaszyns wherever they are. I lived for 26 years abroad - Great Britain and Belgium, but 2 years ago I moved back to Poland.

Would apprieciate your help or how could I joint this discussion group ?

Best Regards,

Michael Kwilecki.

Hi Michal,

How are you. I am the grandson of Stanislaw Ulaszyn whose brothers were Janek and Cyprian. I believe your grandfather, a famous linguist, was their cousin. Given that our name is unique, we are no doubt related. Please join the forum as a full member so I can message you to chat further. I have pictures and our coat of arms on my signet.
