not the village, I just searched it on google. I know the area though. It's very nice. Quite wild, near Bialowieski National Park.

Thats right. Well I received my grandads army records last week . He uses this village as his birth place, the state was then Stara Wieljka, Wilno.. I didnt know if it still existed or whether it was still in Poland because of it being so near the border with Belarus.

Maybe you still have some family there? Do you know? Why not visit the place one day? Personally I love visiting that part of Poland. Not only because of the wild nature but also because the people living there are so friendly (though some of them can only speak the Bialarussian language, so it's a little more difficult to communicate with them) and warm. There are so many interesting places to see. Though it's so close to Białowieża, it's not just a place for tourists but mostly for people seeking peace and quiet. When I go there I usually go to Masiewo, which is close to Narewka too. I love it there.

wOW! It sounds lovely. He lived on a farm run by his family. I am planning on going in February and plan to stay in Białowieża. Unfortunatley i feel it will be very hard to trace my family as I think he changed his name during the war as there are only £okucewicz in England and none in Poland or surrounding countries. Thank you for your feedback.

One of the ways to search for relatives is to search the records in local churches,or maybe rather 'cerkiew' which is the christian orthodox 'church', plus local 'gmina' records, which in your case, I think will be in Narewka. Goo luck

By the way. I just typed your surname on 'nasza klasa', which is a kind of Polish facebook and found someone with your surname living in Poland, in the town of Olsztyn, so it's not true that there are no people with this surname living in Poland.

The lady's first name is Barbara and she is 66. However, £okucewicz is her married name and not her maiden name. Her contact details are hidden. If you want to contact her you need to register on 'nasza klasa'. I've just contacted the Polish Telecom information line but there are no telephone numbers listed under this surname.

In villages like that older people or their descendants will usually tell you what they know about £okucewicz and the such family if it used to live there. You should just go to see them as they will not visit you. There is a nice hotel in Białowieża at which I once stayed and enjoyed their cuisine very much!

Thank you all for your help. I am planning a trip to this area in April 2010 where I hope to trace my ancestors.
