Help with place names; Lubow in Lwow

Hi my Father came to England at the end of WWll as a displaced person, I have been trying for some years along with my brother to find out more about his life before he came here.

I know he which camp he was in prior to coming here, but not much about his forced labour time, I have managed to discover that he worked for the Vereingte Deutsche Kieselgurwerke company until 1944 when I presume the American Army liberated him and he was put in a displaced person camp.

On his D.P Registration record card it says his birthplace is Lubow in Lwow province there is a ' over the O of Lwow, and it gives his last permanent residence as Helm in Lublin province.

However on his certificate in lie of passport it says that he was born at Kuszniszcze in Lubomil.
I do not know which of these is right, are they different spellings of the same place, maybe a British spelling of a Polish place or are they different places altogether.

I would like to send off at some point for his birth certificate assuming there is one left after 79 years and a war.
Any help or advice would be most gratefully received.
Thankyou

Thankyou very much Alexandra for your help it is much appreciated. :-)

AAlexandra I have just taken a look at the site you gave me and put in Kuszniszcze which is the only spelling I have of the town and is taken from my Fathers certificate in lieu of passport form.

There were 80 possibles and not one of them was spelt the same way, now I do not know how this should sound when pronounced so I am not sure which if any it could be.

This is such a huge stumbling block for me, I do not know if it was spelt correctly on the form or not.
I am really confused right now.

Thankyou very much Alexandra for your help it is much appreciated. :-)

There were 80 possibilities but all of them near Lwow? See how many of them are in Ukraine or nearby and then you will know.

Dear littlemak_uk:

Sure, I'm a couple of years late to the party, but...

The town given (in its formerly Polish spelling) as "Kuszniszcze in Lubomil" is almost surely the town known nowadays as "Kusnishcha" or "Kusnishche" in Ukraine, located only about 2 miles north of the larger town of Lyuboml' (formerly "Luboml" in Polish) at latitude and longitude coordinates 51°17'N 24°02'E. Before the war, this town was in the Luboml district of the Wolyn province of Poland.

The last permanent residence given as "Helm" is probably the (still) Polish town of Chelm, located across the border in Poland, about 20 miles west of Kusnishche.

The National Archives of Ukraine might be able to help you with locating genealogical resources. They have a website you can google up. I am a new member here, so this message posting system will not allow me to simply write it here.
