It would still have to be distilled/matured in Scotland to be called Scotch whisky though.
exaclty, even if the 'Scottish' Company was taken over by a 'Polish' company, for it to be Scottish whisky, it would still have to be made to the original patented specification. Misty is also correct as to be 'Scottish' whisky it would have to be distilled and matured in Scotland.
When you are buying a company or other business, you are not buying business really, you are buying their products, ideas, designs etc etc and this all comes in the way of patents and copyright protection. In other words you are buying 'assets' to add to your own company
Exactly tornado. One of Scotland's biggest produces of whisky is now in the hands of the polish, im not too sure but i will find out. by buying in "scottish" whisky, then maturing it in poland, they are able to lable the bottles as Scotch. in their country only. now we get into difficult patent laws. By law Scotch can only be made in Scotland. But this factory is importing scottish whisky.
That makes me angry, as a true scottish whisky lover, where do we cross the line? This company owns Famous Grouse, one of the most famous scottish brewery's. Famous im not to concerned with, But famous own the right to Macallan...one of Scotlands most guarded secrets. A true whisky dated back to the 13th cent...and this company want to mass produce this Whisky.
This information is from their web site. It appears it’s made in Poland, and it could be under license although it did not said so. The other product they carry The Macallan single malt said it’s Distilled at The Macallan distillery in Speyside, Scotland, but this one said this.
Pierwsza polska whisky. Jest to whisky typu blended-mieszana, wytwarzana z żyta i słodu jęczmiennego z zachowaniem klasycznej szkockiej technologii. Jej ciemny, złocisty kolor zharmonizowany...
First Polish whisky. This is blended-mixed whisky, made of rye and barley malt according to the traditional Scottish technology. Its dark, has gold colour,...
more detail into it finds out that the company is owned by absolut? who i know because i teach their board, is owned by sobieski. Macallan has been around for hundreds of years, so i dont get why they say its Polish. and why Scotch in big letters on the bottle:/

So they still can't call it Scotch because it MUST be matured in Scotland for it to have such a name. They can, of course, import it AFTER it has matured in Scotland it can still legally be called Scotch.
I was in Makro and discussing it with a member of staff. She insists that this is a Polish whisky. They snuck the Scottish expertise in through the back door, I think.
Apparently its distilled and blended in Poland at the Zielona Góra distillery along with another called "Old Family Whisky". Both are bottled by L.W.W.G. Polmos S.A., Zielonej Górze.
Its a bit cheeky to call it "Scotch".
As Mel Gibson said - "You can take our lives but you will never take our Whisky................ Mr Suntory"
Aha, Polmos fairly spread the net wide. They have a decent rum in Galeon. I didn't try that whisky but dtaylor has I think. I just don't like the idea of dark whisky. I think I educated the Makro staff a little on what's good and what's not.
You can promote it with Scots but not as Scotch :) Sean Connery did a commercial for Suntory Zen. It was 950 yen if I remember, about a fiver. The bottle was a decent size too. As a Scot who likes whisky, I'd say it was very good value for money.
That's not at all bad. Better than the rum from Polmos Warszawa which is more of a rum flavoured vodka.
You'll notice some shops, especially supermarkets, only have the Dark with Scotch on the label, and some smaller shops still have stock from when they used to make it in Poland.
I once drank some home-made whisky here. Bimber really, from Podlasie, but the old guy who made it used to put it in old whisky bottles and some people didn't notice. Actually rather passable.
There are plenty bonded wharehouses near where I live. A typical barrel will lose around 50 litres over a ten year period of maturation. So a wee drop going missing isn't noticed.
Its fairly easy to get some "white whisky" but jeeze.....its like petrol.
A nice blend is as good as a Malt - Black Bottle isn't too bad for the price. Any whisky over 8 years is palatable. Be interesting if the Polish distillery decide to produce aged whiskies.
Too much Grants Scotch is slowing me down but I get your joke. Good one, sledz :) :)
Chivas perhaps isn't objectively the best but it's super value for money. Perhaps the best in that department. I was born not far from the distillery so I'm a little biased :)
What on earth is a picture of the Queen doing as your avatar, fella? ;)
Mr Suntory has actually done some superb things with whisky. Try the 12-year old Yamazaki or the 17-year old Hibiki: both are cracking! And Japanese whisky is getting better and better, unlike Scotch: you idiots close your best distilleries down!
Naturally, none of the smarties posted a link to Polmos. of course this, of course that! ech, children...

Also in Poland, created Dark Whiskey (V & S Luxury ) . It is a blended liquor , obtained by a combination of selected species of Scotch whiskey , produced according to the standard set of V & S Luxury , according to a formula developed by Polmos Zielona Gora . Distillates to produce Dark Whiskey aging in Scotland at least 3 years . The Green Mountain is a set which is aged in oak barrels for no longer than a month , then filtered through specially selected filter media and packaged in bottles.
The distiller in Scotland, aged 3 years in Scotland whisky is bought by Polmos and blended in Poland.
